Job Description

Job Title: Narragansett High School Agricultural Science Teacher

Reports To: Principal and/or Career & Technical Education (CTE) Director

Position Summary: The High School Agricultural Science Teacher is responsible for planning and delivering a comprehensive agricultural education program that includes classroom and laboratory instruction, supervision of student agricultural experiences (SAEs), and active leadership of the school's chapter of the National FFA Organization. The teacher prepares students for careers and postsecondary education in agriculture while promoting leadership, personal growth, and career success.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities Instruction
  • Plan, develop, and deliver engaging lessons aligned with state agricultural education standards.
  • Teach courses in areas such as Animal Science, Plant Science, Agribusiness, Agricultural Mechanics, Natural Resources, Environmental Science.
  • Utilize greenhouse, land laboratory, and shop facilities to provide hands‑on learning experiences.
  • Differentiate instruction to meet the diverse learning needs of students.
  • Assess student learning and maintain accurate academic records.
FFA Program Leader (Required)
  • Serve as the advisor for the school's FFA Chapter.
  • Plan, organize, and supervise chapter meetings, officer training, and leadership development activities.
  • Prepare students for FFA Career Development Events, Leadership Development Events, proficiency awards, degree applications, and speaking contests.
  • Coordinate student participation in local, district, state, and national FFA events and conventions.
  • Promote student membership and active involvement in FFA.
  • Work with alumni, advisory committees, community partners, and agricultural organizations to support the FFA program.
Supervised Agricultural Experiences (SAEs)
  • Supervise and evaluate students' Supervised Agricultural Experience projects.
  • Conduct on‑site visits to student SAE placements.
  • Assist students in maintaining accurate SAE records.
  • Develop partnerships with local agricultural businesses and employers.
Program Management
  • Maintain agricultural laboratories, greenhouse, mechanics shop, equipment, and instructional materials.
  • Develop and manage departmental budgets and inventories.
  • Ensure compliance with all safety regulations and procedures.
  • Recruit students into agricultural education programs.
  • Assist in developing grant proposals and securing community partnerships.
Student Support
  • Foster a positive, inclusive classroom environment.
  • Advise students on agricultural careers, college opportunities, and industry certifications.
  • Communicate regularly with parents and guardians regarding student progress.
Professional Responsibilities
  • Participate in faculty meetings, professional development, and school committees.
  • Maintain required teaching certification and agricultural education credentials.
  • Collaborate with administrators, counselors, and community stakeholders.
  • Stay current with emerging agricultural technologies and industry trends.
Qualifications Required
  • Bachelor's degree in Agricultural Education or closely related field.
  • Valid Rhode Island teaching certification in Agricultural Education/Career and Technical Education (or eligibility to obtain certification).
  • Ability to advise and supervise an active FFA chapter.
  • Knowledge of agricultural science curriculum and laboratory safety.
  • Excellent communication, organization, and leadership skills.
  • Ability to travel and work evenings and weekends for FFA activities, competitions, and student supervision.
Preferred
  • Master's degree in Agricultural Education or related field.
  • Experience teaching secondary agricultural education.
  • Experience coaching FFA Career Development Events and Leadership Development Events.
  • Experience managing agricultural laboratories, greenhouses, or school farms.
  • Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or willingness to obtain one, if required by the district.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to supervise students in classrooms, laboratories, shops, greenhouses, farms, and during travel.
  • Frequent standing, walking, bending, and operating agricultural equipment and tools.
Work Schedule

Evening and weekend responsibilities required for FFA meetings, competitions, livestock shows, community events, and student supervision.
