Job Title:
Long Term Substitute Transition Academy Special Ed Teacher (anticipated first semester of school year)
Job Summary:
The Transition Academy Special Ed Teacher provides specialized instruction and support to students with disabilities, typically ages 18–22, to prepare them for successful adult living, employment, and community participation. The teacher develops individualized transition plans, delivers life skills and vocational instruction, and collaborates with families, employers, and community agencies (BHDDH, ORS) to help students achieve their post-secondary goals.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement individualized instructional programs aligned with each student's Individualized Education Program (IEP) and transition goals.
- Teach functional academics, daily living skills, social skills, self-advocacy, and vocational skills. This includes cooking skills.
- Provide job coaching and supervise students during community-based work experiences and internships.
- Conduct assessments to monitor student progress and adjust instruction accordingly.
- Collaborate with related service providers, families, employers, and community agencies to support student success.
- Facilitate transition planning meetings and ensure compliance with federal, state, and local special education regulations.
- Maintain accurate student records, progress reports, and IEP documentation.
- Promote positive behavior through evidence-based classroom management strategies.
- Assist students in developing independence in transportation, money management, personal care, and community access.
- Create a safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environment.
- Participate in professional development, staff meetings, and school activities as required.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Special Education or a related field (Master's degree preferred).
- Valid RI State teaching certification/licensure in Special Education.
- Experience working with adolescents or young adults with intellectual, developmental, autism spectrum, or multiple disabilities in a community/employment setting preferred.
- Knowledge of transition planning, vocational education, and community-based instruction.
- Strong communication, collaboration, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to build positive relationships with students, families, employers, and community partners.
Preferred
Skills:
- Experience with transition assessments and career planning.
- Knowledge of assistive technology and adaptive instructional strategies.
- Familiarity with employment support services and community resources.
- Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
- Experience with supervising job coaches.
Working Conditions:
- Work occurs in classroom, community, and vocational settings.
- The position is located at Narragansett Pier School.
- Frequent travel to community job sites and instructional locations may be required.
- May involve lifting, assisting, or supporting students with mobility or behavioral needs.
- May include driving the program van, if the applicant is qualified and comfortable with this responsibility.
