Post Anesthesia Care Unit Nurse

Supports and promotes the mission and values of the organization. Renders professional nursing care to patients within an assigned unit of the hospital, in support of medical care as directed by medical staff and the policies of the organization. Completes all unit-specific competencies and requirements for critically ill patients. Participates in quality improvement planning and processes for the area of practice.

Completes clinical documentation and care plans comprehensively and in a timely manner for all assigned patients. Seeks feedback regarding practice and takes appropriate actions. Practice reflects knowledge of current practice standards. Communicates patient information appropriately for continuity and safe care through handoffs, walking rounds, and physician/provider interaction. Provides a safe environment for patients, visitors, and staff by following established procedures and protocols.

Implements resources and initiatives to improve patient safety. Works within guidelines of a Just Culture Environment to promote error reporting and the adoption of safe practices. Addresses issues through appropriate use of the chain of command. Completes hourly rounding in collaboration with nursing assistants on all assigned patients. Identifies and assists in correcting patient care safety issues. Recognizes and praises excellent performance in colleagues when identified.

Builds respectful relationships through early and proactive identification of concerns, compliments, or suggestions. Collaborates within and between shifts for timely resolution of conflicts and issues. Consults with nurses in other units to draw upon expertise in other clinical areas. Displays a professional, positive perspective at all times, including during difficult circumstances. Seeks opportunities to assist all team members. Displays willingness to resolve tension within the unit by volunteering to accept an admission or adjust an assignment.

Demonstrates practice consistent with shared governance and the philosophy of the unit and organization. Assists in identifying solutions in response to problems and conflicts. Effectively delegates aspects of care and unit activities to other nursing personnel. Collaborates in planning, supervising, and instructing other nurses and assistants. Works collaboratively with nursing students and instructors. Participates in peer review of colleagues. Participates in survey readiness.

Demonstrates commitment to co-workers and holds peers accountable. Manages time off per policy. Performs other duties consistent with this role. 3 years of critical care experience preferred. Assists with insertion of Flow wire, Opsens, and IVUS. Must demonstrate contraindications and reversal for IV adenosine infusion. Ability to safely administer procedural sedation and document sedation as per policies and procedures.
