RemX is proud to represent our prestigious client in the civil construction industry who is seeking a highly analytical and detail-oriented Assistant Controller to support and strengthen their accounting and financial operations. Reporting directly to executive leadership, this role will play a critical part in overseeing the accounting function, managing financial reporting, supporting operational decision-making, and ensuring accurate job costing across multiple projects.
This is an excellent opportunity for a hands-on accounting professional with construction, demolition, excavation, heavy civil or other project-based industry experience who thrives in a fast-paced environment and enjoys partnering with operations to drive profitability and financial performance.
- Supervise, mentor, and develop accounting staff while promoting adherence to established accounting policies and procedures
- Lead and manage month/year-end close processes, including journal entries, account reconciliations and financial statement preparation
- Prepare monthly/quarterly/annual financial reports ensuring accuracy and compliance with GAAP
- Oversee all job costing functions ensuring costs are accurately captured, allocated and reported
- Review project budgets, committed costs, change orders, labor allocation, equipment utilization, subcontractor costs and overall project profitability
- Partner with project managers and operations leadership to monitor project financial performance and provide cost analysis and forecasting
- Analyze job cost reports and investigate cost variances, identifying risks and opportunities for improved project profitability
- Maintain and strengthen internal controls, accounting procedures, and financial reporting processes
- Assist with annual budgeting, forecasting, cash flow management, and financial planning activities
- Support audits and serve as a primary point of contact for external auditors, lenders, and tax professionals
- Manage fixed assets, depreciation schedules, and construction-related accounting functions
- Identify and implement process improvements to streamline accounting operations and enhance financial visibility across projects
- Support financial system enhancements and reporting initiatives
- Minimum 5-7 years of progressive accounting experience, preferably within commercial demolition, excavation, construction, heavy civil, industrial services, or other project-based industries with transferable experience
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required
- Strong understanding of GAAP, financial reporting, and internal controls
- Hands-on experience with job costing, work-in-progress (WIP) reporting, project accounting and project profitability analysis required
- Demonstrated ability to analyze project budgets, estimate-to-complete reporting, cost-to-complete projections and cost variance analysis
- Dedicated work ethic, ability to work effectively in fast paced settings with multi-shifting priorities
- Partner with project managers and operations leaders to improve project financial performance
- Prior leadership or supervisory experience preferred
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills with strong attention to detail
- Ability to effectively manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
- Strong communication and collaboration skills with the ability to work effectively across departments
- Proficiency with ERP systems such as Computer East, Deltek or similar preferred
