Position Summary

SB & Company, LLC is seeking a Tax Manager who specializes in tax-exempt organizations. This professional will lead compliance and advisory engagements for charitable organizations, membership and trade associations, religious organizations, educational and research institutions, foundations, and other exempt entities. The role combines hands‑on technical leadership with client service, team development, coordination with SBC’s established nonprofit audit practice, and responsibility for standardizing how exempt‑organization tax work is planned, executed, reviewed, and delivered.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead and review federal and state tax compliance for exempt organizations and related taxable entities, including Forms 990, 990-EZ, 990-T, 990-PF, 4720, and relevant Forms 1120 and 1065.
  • Advise clients on maintaining exempt status, unrelated business income, public‑support testing, private‑foundation rules, excess‑benefit transactions, lobbying and political activity, alternative investments, and other organization‑specific tax matters.
  • Serve as a primary tax contact for assigned clients and communicate technical issues in practical, board‑and‑management‑ready language.
  • Coordinate closely with audit engagement partners and teams to define ownership, information flow, timing, review, approval, and client communication responsibilities.
  • Own the design and implementation of standardized exempt‑organization information requests, work papers, review checklists, technical consultations, timelines, and quality controls.
  • Manage engagement scope, schedules, staffing, budgets, billings, collections, realization, and risk.
  • Recognize and develop advisory opportunities involving UBIT planning, alternative investments, related entities, governance, transactions, tax controversy, and organizational changes.
  • Research and document complex tax positions and monitor changes affecting exempt organizations.
  • Train, supervise, and mentor tax professionals and provide technical training to audit professionals where appropriate.
  • Contribute to proposals, thought leadership, market activities, and relationships within the nonprofit community.
Qualifications

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, taxation, finance, or a related field.
  • Active CPA license, active attorney license, or Enrolled Agent credential; CPA preferred.
  • At least five years of progressive public‑accounting tax experience, including substantial direct experience serving tax‑exempt organizations.
  • Demonstrated experience preparing and reviewing Forms 990 and 990‑T and managing exempt‑organization engagements.
  • Working knowledge of core exempt‑organization tax principles, including IRC Sections 501(c), 509(a), 511–514, and 4958.
  • Strong project‑management, technical‑research, client‑service, written‑communication, and team‑leadership skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with audit professionals while maintaining clear tax ownership and quality standards.
