About the Role

Southern Contracting is seeking a motivated Assistant Project Engineer to support heavy civil construction projects. You’ll work closely with Project Managers and Superintendents, assisting with plan reviews, submittals, scheduling, vendor coordination, and field documentation. This is an excellent opportunity for recent graduates or early-career professionals in Civil Engineering or Construction Management to gain hands‑on experience and grow into leadership roles.

Key Responsibilities
  • Interpret project plans and specifications to ensure construction accuracy
  • Assist with submittal review and management
  • Generate purchase orders and track material deliveries
  • Support project scheduling and subcontractor coordination
  • Prepare daily field reports for leadership review
  • Ensure compliance with state, federal, and client requirements
  • Provide general support to Project Managers and Superintendents
Qualifications
  • U.S. Citizenship required (federal project access)
  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering (required) or Construction Management (preferred)
  • 1+ years of experience in heavy civil construction preferred (entry-level candidates with strong academics encouraged)
  • Strong organizational, problem‑solving, and multitasking skills
  • Excellent communication and team-oriented mindset
  • Ability to pass state & federal background checks
  • Civil Engineer license or active pursuit of licensure is a plus
