Summary

The Dean of Student Life is a 12 month position that oversees student life, manages discipline and the honor code, monitors students' social and academic progress, and communicates expectations that help students mature into responsible, productive members of the community. The Dean should be intentional about cultivating character among students. The Upper School Dean of Student Life will teach one or two classes, depending on need and expertise, will sit on the Upper School leadership team, and will report directly to the Head of Upper School.

Functions

The tasks, duties, and responsibilities of this job include, but are not limited to:

  • Discipline
    • Promote and nurture a culture of relational discipline in which students are known and loved while also being held to high standards
    • Evaluate FRA's discipline program and propose adjustments when appropriate
    • Oversee and administer student adherence to FRA's dress code policy, as outlined in the handbook
    • Oversee and administer FRA's random drug testing program
    • Monitor all detentions, clearly and punctually communicating with students and parents about when to serve detentions and working with students who struggle to meet expectations
    • Proactively communicate with students and parents when students accrue excessive detentions or fail to serve detentions punctually
    • Partner with the head of upper school on discipline cases warranting a suspension or separation from school
  • Student Life
    • Partner with the advisory coordinator to ensure smooth management of the advisory program, including placing new students in advisory groups and drafting advisory groups for rising 9th graders
    • Co-sponsor the student council and provide guidance to student government leaders
    • Work with the student council to support existing student activities and promote new ones, focusing on increasing student leadership opportunities and leadership skills
    • Meet regularly with the director of student activities to discuss student events and school-sponsored clubs
    • Maintain the school event calendar and attend regularly student life events, such as athletic events, arts performances, dances, etc.
    • Observe the latest trends in social media and their impact on student life
    • Manage the school's device policy, including but not limited to the Yondr Pouch system
  • Honor Council
    • Oversee the honor system and be the person most responsible for the furtherance of academic integrity among the students
    • Consult with and supervise the honor council sponsors and provide direction when needed and be a resource when called upon
    • Review each honor case individually and meet with each student and their parents at the conclusion of every case
    • Administer all consequences related to honor issues
  • Attendance
    • Work directly with the upper school administrative assistant on a daily basis to monitor attendance, tardies, college visits, and early dismissals.
    • Administer any discipline related to attendance and excessive absences/tardies
    • Track excessive absenteeism and communicate with parents and students about potential consequences
  • Interim
    • Partner with the assistant head of upper school in leading the faculty in designing mission-appropriate interim trips and programs each year
    • Co-manage the interim calendar: trip proposals, trip approvals, assemblies, parent communication, sign-up deadlines, etc.
    • Articulate Interim expectations and lead meetings to discuss with students and faculty
  • Miscellaneous
    • The Dean will chaperone most dances and school-sponsored activities.
    • The Dean will work closely with the school counselor and shall be a resource for parents and students on emotional and health-related issues.
    • The Dean will maintain a high degree of visibility throughout the school day and at athletic and artistic events.
    • The Dean will provide students with an example of faith, leadership, citizenship, and integrity.
    • The Dean will teach one to two classes in his or her area of expertise and serve as an advisor.
Qualifications Education/Experience
  • Master's degree or higher, preferred
  • Experience working in independent school teaching and leadership
