Provides support services and direct instruction to meet the needs of students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing.
What you will do- Provides regularly scheduled direct instruction in the development of auditory skill, speech and language skills and self‑advocacy skills that align with district standards
- Provides collaboration, consultation and in‑service training to school staff regarding, but not limited to, the impact of hearing loss on academic progress, classroom acoustics, hearing aids, Hearing Assistive Technology and hearing evaluations
- Develops and implements compliant IEPs, provides assistance to general and exceptional education teachers and staff working with students who are Deaf/Hard of Hearing, and manages a caseload of diverse learners from ages 3 to 22, including students who may have additional disabilities
- Monitors and evaluates student academic progress using formal and informal measures and provides regular progress reports to school staff and parents.
- Maintains knowledge of grade level curriculum requirements and develops strategies with classroom teachers to effectively enable the students to access the curriculum
- Remains current in technological advances, understanding and monitoring the use of all hearing assistive technology and equipment, personal and district‑provided, and technical devices and serves as a resource to school staff, parents and students.
- Updates skills necessary to complete job requirements, i.e. sign language skills and maintain licensure.
- Completes district and state mandated trainings within required timelines
- Demonstrates knowledge of the differences between IEPs and 504 plans, attends 504 meetings as required and provides support to school staff and students as stated in each document
- Fosters emotional well‑being and encourages social interaction with hearing peers within the school community. Provides opportunities, where possible, for social interaction among peers with hearing loss.
- Assists in the development of student transition plans, programs, and goals for the purpose of supporting the student transition from one school to another and/post‑high school and developing students' vocational skills. Maintains a working knowledge of school and community resources available to students and parents.
- Bachelor's Degree In Education of the Deaf/hard of Hearing Required
- Knowledge and experience of speech and language development as impacted by hearing loss: understanding of functioning of hearing aids, cochlear implants, hearing assistive technology, working knowledge of audiograms/audiological evaluations; and ability to modify curricula to meet students’ needs are required.
- Knowledge of sign language is preferred.
- Current Tennessee Department of Education licensure/certification in Education of Students with Hearing loss Required
