Primary Duties and Responsibilities

The Transition to Residency (TTR) Course Director and Career Advising Director leads the development and implementation of the final‑phase course preparing students for residency. Responsibilities include designing didactic and simulation‑based sessions on advanced clinical decision‑making, patient handoffs, time management, wellness, and interprofessional communication. The director oversees the development of a formal TTR course, coordinates with residency program directors to ensure readiness, provides structured mentorship in specialty selection and career planning, and integrates personal advising, residency application preparation, and interview readiness programming to support student success in the Match process.

The director also serves as a member of the Individualization Phase Subcommittee of the Curriculum Committee and attends monthly clerkship director meetings and curriculum committee meetings.

Competencies and Expectations
  • Maintain board certification (or eligibility) through the appropriate specialty board.
  • Understand school‑wide educational goals for students as outlined in student handbooks.
  • Communicate curricular goals of the department and FCoM clearly to students and faculty.
  • Manage the program with administrative skills, including scheduling for students and faculty.
  • Ensure consistency in curriculum and learner assessment across multiple clinical sites.
  • Manage a credible, fair process of student assessment and grading meeting legal and accreditation standards.
  • Provide feedback to students and faculty in a skilled manner.
  • Analyze program evaluation data to effect continuous educational quality improvement.
  • Collaborate with other educational leaders to improve the program.
  • Assist in remediation for students who do not pass the clerkship.
  • Provide skilled career counseling with knowledge of residency programs.
  • Demonstrate excellent interpersonal and leadership skills.
  • Advise department chair and medical education leaders on policy and strategic planning.
Administration
  • Regular communication with department/curriculum support regarding schedules and rotation requirements.
  • Regular supervision of key departmental faculty at each clinical site.
  • Regular reports on curricular issues, faculty contributions, patient load adequacy, and student performance.
  • Letters of recommendation for students applying to residency programs.
  • Attend 75% of required curriculum meetings and department meetings.
  • Attend annual FCoM education retreats.
  • Meet with each clinical site at least annually.
Curriculum
  • Annual revision of the discipline‑specific core curriculum.
  • Ensure appropriate student completion of experience and procedure logs and report adequacy of patient load per clerkship.
  • Periodic review of NBME subject examination scores upon release.
Assessment
  • Timely reporting of grades with narrative comments on goals, strengths, and areas for improvement.
  • Communicate regarding students with academic difficulty and refer as warranted.
Expected Time Commitment

This clerkship director position is a 50% FTE (five half‑day weeks), with the director also building curriculum for the Clerkship and Individualization Phases.

Required Qualifications

Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree; board certification in a relevant specialty; minimum 5–7 years of clinical practice experience. Academic experience teaching medical students or residents is preferred (3–5 years).
