Primary Duties and Responsibilities

The Instructional Designer partners with faculty and academic units to design and develop high-quality learning experiences across multiple modalities. This role leads the instructional design process from analysis through implementation, applying evidence-based learning theories, design frameworks, and institutional standards. The position exists to ensure that courses and programs are aligned with learning outcomes, scalable across offerings, and designed to promote meaningful learner engagement and success.

  • Lead instructional design for courses and programs by guiding faculty and subject matter experts through a structured design process from concept to delivery.
  • Design and develop learning experiences and course materials, including assessments, learning activities, and instructional content aligned with best practices in pedagogy and adult learning.
  • Apply design standards and quality assurance frameworks (e.g., backward design, Quality Matters, UDL) to ensure consistency, accessibility, and high-quality learning experiences.
  • Manage multiple design projects simultaneously, including timelines, deliverables, and stakeholder communication, ensuring efficient and timely course development.
  • Evaluate and improve course effectiveness using student feedback, course analytics, and faculty input to inform ongoing revisions and enhancements.
  • Contribute to design practices, including the development of templates, documentation, and standards that support consistency across programs.

Required Qualifications
  • Demonstrated knowledge of instructional design theories, models, and best practices.
  • Ability to apply evidence-based design principles to develop effective learning experiences.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills, including the ability to assess learning needs and design appropriate solutions.
  • Proven project management skills, including the ability to manage multiple projects, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with faculty and stakeholders.
  • Experience designing courses, assessments, and learning activities across modalities.
  • Proficiency with learning management systems (e.g., Canvas) and course development tools.
  • Ability to work independently while exercising sound judgment and initiative.
  • Experience working in a fast‑paced environment and the ability to respond to high‑pressure situations. Ability to thrive in an environment of hard work.
  • Ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
Required Education

A master’s degree in Instructional Design, Educational Technology, or a closely related field is required for this position. A terminal degree or advanced specialization in learning sciences, instructional design, or pedagogy is preferred and may be considered advantageous.

Required Experience

Professional experience in instructional design, course development, or a related field is required. Experience in higher education and the design of online or hybrid learning environments is preferred, along with demonstrated work consulting with faculty or subject matter experts.

The selected candidate will be required to complete a background check satisfactory to the University.
