The South Cumberland Plateau Ameri Corps Project is a direct service initiative with some capacity-building opportunities that engage our community through hunger relief, financial literacy, opioid prevention and recovery, tutoring, and education. SCP Ameri Corps encourages collaboration with community partners, organizations, and individuals to understand local rural communities' prevalent social, structural, and systemic issues. Direct service volunteer opportunities invite students and local and national civic-minded volunteers to actively engage in promoting social change through community-based initiatives in rural Appalachia.
Service members receive a living stipend during their service and are eligible for the Segal Education Award at the end of their service term.
The Community Education Support Member (CESM) will primarily work to address the education disparity between the South Cumberland Plateau and the rest of Tennessee. With many deficient educational statistics, this member will work to enrich educational programs at all levels, from reading lessons at grade schools to financial literacy for adults who have been affected by predatory loan providers. This role will have two main focuses: one with childhood education and another with adult education.
Each education support member will have a primary partner, with Better Fi being the adult focussed, and Early Literacy Ambassadors being the childhood-focused partner. The Adult CESM role will focus on financial comprehension and outreach to engage with the community. This outreach will target community stakeholders to inform them of this program and to provide these community members with precise information on how to get involved, either as a volunteer or as a recipient.
