Job Description

With general direction, develops large scale projects such as highways, tunnels, mass transit and aviation engineering designs of basic to high complexity to meet client project requirements.

Responsibilities
  • Reviews draft designs for compliance with federal, state and local regulations and signs off on completed designs, ensuring that firm policies and practices are followed.
  • Signs and seals engineering designs as necessary.
  • Performs site reviews and studies to ensure designs are aligned with location specifications.
  • Updates design requirements as necessary.
  • Inspects new construction and existing transportation structures.
  • Collaborates with sales staff to create proposals in response to current and potential client requests for proposal (RFPs).
  • Reviews draft proposals for adherence to firm, industry, state, local and federal regulations and best practices.
  • Meets with current and potential future clients to review their current and future design needs.
  • Attends conferences, symposia, etc. to improve the visibility of the firm's products and services in collaboration with applicable sales staff.
  • Performs other duties as required.
  • Provides technical guidance and training to more junior staff; mentors and develops them for future growth within the discipline and firm.
  • May supervise the work of junior engineers on project work.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil, Transportation, or Structural Engineering or related discipline.
  • Professional engineering (PE) license.
  • 7 years of related experience.
  • Domestic and/or international travel may be required; frequency contingent on specific duties.
  • Equivalent additional directly related experience considered in lieu of a degree.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated experience producing complete PS&E/construction drawing packages, including plan, profile, typical sections, and details.
  • Utility coordination drawings.
  • Signing & striping, ADA ramp details, and staging plans.
  • Advanced proficiency in AutoCAD Civil 3D (surfaces, corridors, alignments, pipe networks, grading objects).
  • Efficient model‑based plan production and sheet set management.
  • Strong experience developing engineer’s cost estimates (OPCC, PS&E level) and technical specifications.
  • Familiarity with state DOT and municipal design standards, with ability to adapt quickly to new agency criteria.
  • Proven ability to work independently with minimal oversight while coordinating across disciplines.
  • Experience supporting projects through design development, QA/QC, and agency review cycles.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including coordination with planners, architects, utility owners, and agency staff.
  • Experience designing transit infrastructure: bus corridors, BRT elements, bus stops, platforms, layover facilities, transit centers, park‑and‑ride facilities, or maintenance yards.
  • Familiarity with transit agency standards (e.g., WeGo, KAT, local transit authorities, FTA guidance).
  • Experience integrating transit operations needs into civil design (curb geometry, bus turning paths, platform clearances).
  • Knowledge of ADA accessibility requirements specific to transit facilities and stops.
  • Experience coordinating with multidisciplinary transit teams, including planners, operations staff, and systems engineers.
  • Understanding of urban right‑of‑way constraints and phased construction for active transit corridors.
