QualificationsEducation equivalent to completion of one year of coursework at a vocational or technical school in communication equipment repair or other related field and experience equivalent to 3 years of full-time communications technical work or computer networking experience.
Additional experience in communications technical work or computer networking may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis, up to one year. Higher education in electrical engineering, information technology, or a related field may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis up to two years.
OverviewThe Tennessee Department of Transportation is currently hiring a full-time TDOT ITS Communications Technician – Level 2 for our Traffic Operations Division location in Davidson County. Position is both in office with considerable amounts of field work.
This position is in the ITS Communications Section within the TDOT Traffic Operations Division. The ITS Communications Section is responsible for design, procurement, installation, repair, and preventive maintenance of TDOT's mission‑critical land mobile radio (LMR) system. The LMR system supports both highway maintenance and incident management (HELP) personnel in the field; statewide on a 24/7/365-day basis. In addition, the Section supports TDOT's interoperability communications, Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), and connected vehicle programs.
Responsibilities- Maintain analog and digital radio communication systems including land mobile radio systems, Ethernet Internet Protocol (IP) wide‑area networks, high‑capacity microwave radio backhaul systems, including mobile radio site repeaters, dispatch consoles, antennas, towers, tower obstruction lighting, shelters and generators.
- Troubleshoot system failures to identify and resolve failures in LMR systems and associated infrastructure.
- Perform installation on various analog and digital radio communication systems for TDOT including, but not limited to, land mobile radio systems, advanced connected vehicle radio systems, high‑capacity backhaul microwave systems, and (IP) computer networking systems.
