Position: Industrial Design Engineer, World Wide Engineering & Innovation - Automation

Industrial Design Engineer – Overview

World Wide Engineering & Innovation (WWEI) is seeking an Industrial Design Engineer to focus on development and validation of next‑generation automation products in partnership with third‑party vendors. This role will work closely with hardware engineering teams and external partners to design, prototype, and test automation solutions across material handling, robotics, and industrial automation applications. The engineer will help translate operational requirements into product specifications and influence mechanical design, system architecture, and integration strategies.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead prototype development, testing, and performance validation with vendors, iterating designs for reliability, throughput, and safety.
  • Translate operational needs into product requirements, collaborating with hardware engineering teams and vendors to design, prototype, and iterate automation solutions.
  • Evaluate mechanical concepts, review layouts, and ensure designs meet safety, performance, and scalability expectations.
  • Define test plans, execute trials, and analyze performance metrics such as throughput, reliability, and operational efficiency.
  • Identify design gaps, drive improvements with vendors, and support engineering trade‑off decisions.
  • Coordinate prototype builds, support FAT/SAT activities, and ensure readiness for pilot deployment.
  • Partner with cross‑functional stakeholders—engineering, operations, safety, and maintenance teams—to validate product performance in operational environments.
  • Document learnings, influence product direction, and manage risks while improving product robustness.
A Day in the Life

Typical duties include reviewing vendor designs, providing feedback on mechanical layouts, aligning on performance, safety, and integration requirements, and collaborating with stakeholders to refine use cases and testing objectives. The role involves traveling to vendor sites or testing locations, executing validation plans, analyzing test results, tracking KPIs, and coordinating with cross‑functional teams to drive design improvements and readiness for pilot deployment.

The Team

WWEI Automation focuses on developing and scaling next‑generation automation solutions across sortation, transportation, and fulfillment operations. The team partners closely with internal engineering groups and third‑party vendors to prototype, test, and mature early‑stage automation concepts into deployable products that improve safety, productivity, and operational scalability.

Basic Qualifications
  • 5+ years of Design/Innovation, research & development, manufacturing, process, industrial engineering, or related experience
  • Experience in management of engineering design projects
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in Engineering (any domain) or foreign equivalent, Operations, Business Administration, or a related field
  • Knowledge of system architecture, optimization, system dynamics, statistical analysis, reliability analysis, and decision making
  • Experience with complex automated material handling equipment, packaging technologies, and systems in high‑speed manufacturing environments
  • Experience with design‑in‑safety and Lean Principles process design
