Description

We are seeking a skilled and safety-focused USCG Licensed Steam Engineer to join our marine operations team. This position plays a critical role in the safe operation, maintenance, and performance of our historic steam propulsion systems and auxiliary machinery.

What You'll Be Doing
  • Operate, monitor, and maintain steam propulsion systems and related machinery aboard the vessel.
  • Conduct routine inspections of boilers, engines, pumps, valves, generators, and auxiliary equipment.
  • Monitor water levels, steam pressure, temperatures, and system performance.
  • Assist with vessel departures, arrivals, and daily engineering operations.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical issues and perform repairs as needed.
  • Coordinate with the Captain and marine crew to ensure safe vessel operations.
  • Maintain accurate engineering logs and records.
  • Participate in preventative maintenance programs and vessel inspections.
  • Assist with Coast Guard inspections and regulatory compliance requirements.
What You'll Be Responsible For
  • Safe and efficient operation of all engineering systems.
  • Maintaining compliance with U.S. Coast Guard regulations and company policies.
  • Monitoring and maintaining boiler and steam system performance.
  • Ensuring machinery spaces remain clean, organized, and inspection‑ready.
  • Identifying maintenance concerns and recommending corrective actions.
  • Supporting emergency response procedures and vessel safety drills.
  • Protecting guests, crew members, and company assets through safe engineering practices.
What You'll Bring To The Crew
  • Current USCG Engineer's License appropriate for the vessel and route.
  • Experience operating steam‑powered vessels or industrial steam systems strongly preferred.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills.
  • Working knowledge of boilers, pumps, piping systems, engines, generators, and auxiliary equipment.
  • Ability to read technical manuals, schematics, and engineering documentation.
  • Strong commitment to safety and regulatory compliance.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with vessel crew.
  • Excellent communication and problem‑solving skills.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous passenger vessel experience.
  • Steam propulsion experience.
  • STCW endorsements, where applicable.
  • Experience with historic or heritage vessels.
  • Welding, fabrication, or mechanical maintenance experience.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, climb ladders, and navigate vessel machinery spaces for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work in varying weather conditions and engine room environments.
  • Ability to respond quickly during emergencies and vessel operations.
  • Ability to work aboard a vessel that may be underway for several hours at a time.
