Position: Project Inspector #1417 - Development Services - Public Works Division

Under limited supervision, ensures compliance with County construction standards and regulations through inspections of highway and engineering projects, including new subdivision roads, , utility installation and repair, sewer cut-in and repair, light construction, and investigates complaints relating to areas of responsibility.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Performs engineering inspection activities associated with review, approval and inspection of subdivision roads, grading, drainage, paving, curbing and right of way; inspects utility and sewer, right of way projects and miscellaneous light construction reviews and signs permits for work within County right-of-way; investigates complaints relating to drainage and road problems.

Maintains daily records relating to inspection reports, subdivision progress information, permits, and complaint investigations; participates in the review of subdivision plans submitted to the planning commission; represents Hamilton County in dealing with the contractors, developers, engineers, surveyors, and the general public on issues relating to areas of responsibility. Performs other related duties as assigned.

  • Knowledge of Hamilton County Subdivision Regulations, County policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devises, Tennessee Standard for Road and Bridge construction.
  • Knowledge of the fundamental principles of engineering inspection, general specifications for roads, utility cut-in, repair and drainage.
  • Knowledge of maps, engineering drawings and specifications and related construction documentation.
  • Skill in reading, interpreting, understanding, and applying Federal rules and regulations, State and Hamilton County Regulations, Policies and Procedures.
  • Skill in planning, organizing, prioritizing engineering inspection activities to ensure compliance with rules, regulations, and procedures.
  • Skill in reading maps, engineering drawings and specifications and related construction documentation and making technical calculations.
  • Skill in communicating effectively orally and in writing and establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with the public, department staff, other County departments and contractors.
  • Skill effectively communicating in both oral and written form.

The equivalent of an Associate’s Degree in Engineering, Construction Technology or directly related discipline from an accredited institution and five (5) years of direct work experience in the construction and engineering field. A valid driver's license is required.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Prior to operating a County-owned vehicle, all employees are required to complete the HC Defensive Driving course and/or an Emergency Vehicle Operations Course (EVOC) provided at the department level.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Work requires moderate physical effort with intermittent sitting, standing, walking, and driving. Regular visits to inspection work sites are required and the occasional lifting and carrying of up to 75 pounds.
