Mechanical Engineer
The Boring Company is revolutionizing urban transportation by building an underground network of tunnels to eliminate soul-crushing traffic.
As a field-based Mechanical Design Engineer, you will design and implement practical mechanical upgrades that help the tunnel boring machines operate safely, reliably, and efficiently in real-world field conditions. This role blends hands‑on field engineering with mechanical design work, including developing and integrating components such as sensor brackets, access hardware, valve handles, guards, mounts, fixtures, and other machine‑interface hardware.
You will work directly on and around the machine to understand requirements, take measurements, develop concepts, validate fit and function, and support fabrication, installation, and iteration in the field. The focus is on practical execution: identifying what is needed, designing solutions that can be built and installed quickly, integrating them cleanly with existing machine systems, and ensuring the machine continues to perform in demanding operating environments.
Responsibilities- Design, modify, and implement practical mechanical solutions for machine operations, including brackets, mounts, guards, handles, fixtures, support equipment, vehicle interfaces, and tunnel infrastructure components.
- Work directly on and around the machine to take measurements, validate fit and function, test components, and execute rapid field iteration from concept through installation.
- Collaborate with project, operations, and engineering teams to validate system behavior, provide field feedback, and ensure design decisions support top-level operational needs and future developments.
- Use sound engineering judgment, hand calculations, CAD, and FEA as appropriate to develop, communicate, and document designs, design changes, field issues, and implemented solutions.
- Support commissioning, maintenance, and daily equipment operation while ensuring systems meet performance, reliability, safety, schedule, and regulatory requirements.
- Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering.
- 1+ years of experience in design, build and testing.
- Proficiency using Solid Works.
- Basic proficiency in machine design.
- Experience in creating manufacturing drawings.
- Hands‑on hardware experience performing fabrication, assembly and/or testing - can be in a professional, academic or recreational setting.
- Strong teamwork skills with a proven ability to effectively interact and collaborate with other engineering disciplines.
