Join a collaborative R&D team focused on developing mechanical solutions for orthopedic implants and instruments used in foot and ankle procedures. As a Staff R&D Design Engineer in Memphis, TN
, focusing on the Foot & Ankle/Lower Extremities market, you will work on the mechanical design of implants and instruments used by surgeons and surgical staff to plan and perform procedures. You will also work in a multidisciplinary group to deliver these devices from concept, through design and manufacturing development, and launch them to market. This role will involve engaging with surgeons and surgical staff to innovate.
- Design, develop, modify, and verify mechanical components and subsystems for implants and surgical instruments using established engineering principles, including fixation systems such as cannulated screws and related technologies.
- Translate user needs into design inputs, specifications, and produce complex system-level designs.
- Analyze and resolve complex design issues using statistical methods and engineering analysis tools.
- Lead root cause investigations and implement corrective actions for product and process issues.
- Create and maintain design documentation, including design history files, in compliance with regulatory requirements.
- Conduct or design advanced prototyping and testing.
- Lead creation and refinement of engineering documentation, such as the Design History file.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams (Quality, Manufacturing, Regulatory, Clinical, Marketing, Project Management) to support design milestones and project timelines.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or related field.
- Minimum 4 years of engineering experience in product design and development.
- Proficiency in CAD (e.g., Solid Works, Creo) including engineering drawings and GD&T.
- Experience in a regulated industry applying design controls and risk management.
- Experience with engineering analysis tools (e.g., FEA) and materials/manufacturing processes.
- Experience in medical device product development.
- Experience designing orthopedic implants or surgical instruments, with a strong preference for fixation systems such as cannulated screws, plating systems, or extremity devices.
