position summarythe deputy chief financial officer is a key strategic partner to the chief financial officer (cfo). The deputy cfo oversees all finance, accounting, and reporting activities for the organization, ensuring compliance with financial regulations, internal controls, and sound fiscal management. This role drives financial sustainability through collaborative leadership and technical expertise.
key duties and responsibilities- leadership & supervision
- supervise finance staff; support professional development and foster a positive, inclusive, high‑performance culture.
- mentor, recruit, train, and evaluate finance staff.
- strategic planning
- facilitate annual budget development and financial planning; assist the cfo in long‑term strategy and fiscal policy.
- provide financial planning and analysis to guide enterprise‑level decisions, resource allocation, and capital planning.
- identify process improvements, operating efficiencies, and cost‑saving measures.
- analyze financial data monthly, flagging risks and opportunities for senior management.
- financial management
- oversee daily accounting operations, including accounts payable/receivable, payroll, and general ledger management.
- prepare and review financial statements, forecasts, and reports for accuracy and regulatory compliance.
- compliance & reporting
- ensure timely tax filings and other statutory reporting.
- maintain accurate records, reporting operational effectiveness, trends, and variances to ownership and senior management.
- serve as liaison for external audits, finance committees, and regulatory agencies.
- lead internal audits, monitor internal controls, and ensure compliance with gaap, gasb, and other regulatory requirements.
bachelor’s degree in business, real estate, public administration, or a related field required; master’s, cpa, cma, or cgma preferred. Minimum 8–10 years of progressive accounting and finance management, including multi‑site/multi‑family operations.
preferred experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities- interpersonal skills – interact professionally and maintain effective working relationships with mdha leadership, coworkers, company representatives, government officials, residents, and the public; work effectively under stress, close deadlines, and competing demands.
- regulatory expertise – knowledge of federal, state, and local laws and regulations governing fair housing policies and practices (hud, lihtc, section 8, affordable housing standards). Excellent management, leadership, and communication skills; detail‑oriented and analytical with sound judgment.
- resilience – willingness, mental and physical ability to perform duties; capable of sitting, standing, walking, using hands, and possessing clear vision, speech, hearing, and observation skills.
- software management – proficient in microsoft word, excel, power point, and other microsoft software; preference for yardi experience.
