Commercial Portfolio Manager
Supports the commercial loan and deposit portfolio of one or more Relationship Managers (Commercial and CRE), providing quality underwriting, sound portfolio management, and superior client service.
Essential Functions- Analyzes financial information to evaluate the creditworthiness of new loan requests, renewal loan requests, and ongoing portfolio management activities within the Bank’s policies and procedures.
- Completes industry research to support existing and new customers.
- Compiles commercial loan packages (non BL and BLE) ensuring completeness and accuracy of information; includes a written credit memo, financial analysis, risk grading, and a recommendation.
- Performs additional credit analysis using in-depth tools when needed (e.g., CRE analysis tool).
- Guides the loan request through the Credit Approval Process, ensuring the structure meets client needs and bank objectives.
- Ensures large commercial loan relationships comply with state and federal regulations and bank policies.
- Monitors and services large commercial loan portfolios through centralized covenant testing, tracking, the annual servicing review process, and exception clearing.
- Grades risk of each loan in the portfolio and recommends adjustments as circumstances change.
- Assists the Relationship Manager in credit presentations to Credit Administration and other committees.
- Ensures all required documentation is in file for all loans and treasury management approvals.
- Works with the Relationship Manager and LOA to clear documentation or compliance deficiencies noted by Loan Operations or other reviews.
- Periodically accompanies the Relationship Manager on calls with existing or prospective customers as requested.
- Builds and maintains positive working relationships with internal partners (Loan Operations, Credit Administrators, Branch Personnel, etc.).
- Undertakes special projects related to the job function as directed by Credit Administration Leadership.
- Continuously updates skills through professional training and cross‑training opportunities offered by the Bank.
- Works with the Relationship Manager, Credit Administrators, and Loan Assistant to minimize past‑due loans.
- Serves as a trusted advisor to clients and prospects within the context of risk management.
- Demonstrates a commitment to fair lending practices and remains knowledgeable of all applicable laws and regulations.
- Ensures compliance with bank policies and procedures, and all state and federal regulations.
- Builds and maintains positive relationships with attorneys, appraisers, developers, and others to enhance the Bank’s reputation.
- Stays abreast of products and services the Bank provides and adheres to corporate policies, federal and state regulations, and laws.
- Follows regulatory requirements including the Bank Secrecy Act (BSA), Anti‑Money Laundering (AML), Customer Identification Program (CIP), and OFAC.
- Accepts other duties as assigned.

- Four‑year degree in Business Administration, Finance, Accounting, or a related field; graduation from a recognized school of banking is an asset or equivalent experience.
- Minimum of 4–6 years of experience in credit analysis, commercial banking, or business banking with at least 2 years of specific portfolio management and/or underwriting experience supporting Middle Market.
- Familiarity with loan structuring and documentation.
- In‑depth knowledge of accounting, lending principles, federal and state lending regulations, and bank policies related to lending procedures.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- South State Bank credit policies, procedures, and underwriting standards.
- Annual regulatory and compliance training.
- Additional training as needed.

Must be able to stand and/or sit for long periods of time and effectively access and interpret information on computer screens, documents, and reports.
