Position Description
Directs actions of children and traffic at street intersections and school entrances to ensure safe crossings; monitors and enforces school zone speed limits.
This position is a non-supervisory classification and receives limited supervision, consulting with Field Supervisor on unusual situations.
Candidates must be able to think and react independently to various situations.
Work Hours: Three hours per school day; early morning and afternoon. Specific hours are determined when assigned to school. On occasion, may be required to work special assignments. Incumbent works 10 months out of the year. Typical Duties- Patrols street crossings and school entrances during hours when children are going to and coming from school
- Directs the actions of children and traffic
- Escorts children across the street
- Records license numbers of vehicles disregarding the school zone speed limit
- Places and removes caution signs and cones
- Cautions drivers of speeding vehicles by use of whistle and/or hand signals
The work requires some physical exertion such as walking, climbing, bending, stooping, stretching, or similar activities. The work requires standing for long periods of time.

- Whistle
- Hand‑held stop sign
- Safety vest
- Department‑issued uniform
- Must be of good moral character and reputation.
- Candidates with accreditations earned in a foreign institute are encouraged to apply.
- All employees of the Metropolitan Government shall be residents of the State of Tennessee or become residents of the state within six (6) months of employment as a prerequisite to employment with the Metropolitan Government.
- Employees must pass a pre‑employment physical exam
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
- Ability to communicate effectively
- Ability to lift up to 10 pounds
The Police Department's School Crossing Guard division will contact selected candidates for interviews.
