Position: Plans Examiner 2

The Plans Examiner 2 is located within the Codes Administration and is responsible for examining plans and specifications for compliance with all adopted regulatory codes. Performs related duties as required.

The Metro Department of Codes and Building Safety, During the 2025 fiscal year, Codes issued and tracked $3.8 billion in building permits. The department concerns itself with the safety of the public as occupants in homes and buildings throughout the county and promotes beautiful neighborhoods through the enforcement of local codes and zoning regulations. Codes is an exciting and fast paced environment for those passionate about public safety in the construction and planning sectors.

  • Examine blueprints, plans, and specifications for compliance with regulatory codes.
  • Check dimensions of plans to ensure minimum requirements are met.
  • Review specifications for all materials.
  • Recommend approval or disapproval of plans after thorough examination.
  • Perform inspections as needed.
  • Report discrepancies and design variations found in plans, building materials, and methods of construction.
  • Confer with the public, architects, engineers, and contractors to explain codes and standards.
  • Consult with appropriate organizations on the best methods to achieve compliance with codes.
  • Perform administrative duties.
  • Write detailed reports as needed.
  • Maintain records on each plan review application.
  • Attend appeal cases as needed and submits documentation to be considered in the final decision.
  • Serve as a liaison with code groups and organizations involved in code development and product approvals.
  • Use a computer terminal to input and retrieve information.
  • Answer inquiries concerning codes regulations.

Bachelor’s Degree in Architecture, Engineering, or a related field from an accredited college or university and two (2) years' experience dealing with building construction, designing structures, and/or reviewing commercial plans and specifications.

Additional experience may be considered in lieu of education (1:1 Ratio)

LICENSES REQUIRED

Valid Driver License

State of Tennessee Building Inspector's Certificate

Certified by the International Code Council (ICC), as follows:

Certified Residential Building Inspector (ICC)

Certified Commercial Building Inspector (ICC)

Certified Building Plans Examiner (ICC)

Any employee appointed to this classification shall obtain required certification within two (2) years from the effective date of their appointment. Failure to meet the certification requirements within the two (2) year period may result in disciplinary action.

Note:

Per Metro Ordinance No. SO94-1078. All employees of the Metropolitan Government shall be residents of the State of Tennessee or become residents of the state within six (6) months of employment as a prerequisite to employment with the Metropolitan Government.

  • Knowledge of the International Building Codes and other applicable codes
  • Knowledge of the materials, methods, and procedures used in construction
  • Knowledge of codes, laws, and ordinances relating to construction plans and specifications
  • Knowledge of architectural design symbols
  • Knowledge of legal terminology used in construction documents
  • Microsoft Office proficient
