Job Overview
The Department of Transportation and Multimodal Infrastructure (NDOT) is seeking a Safety Inspector to join our Safety division. A Safety Inspector is responsible for ensuring safety awareness in both work practices and organizational culture. The incumbent conducts workplace safety inspections and investigations; maintains records on workplace incidents; vehicular crashes; injuries on duty; training courses; and develops and delivers safety training. The applicant will also be responsible for identifying best practices for reducing workplace safety risks.
Performs related duties as required.
The Department of Transportation and Multimodal Infrastructure delivers a range of services, and the nearly 400 employees work around the clock to ensure a multimodal system that offers choice and better connects neighborhoods, residents, businesses and visitors to the place that they need and want to go to in a safe manner. These employees are responsible for over 2,200 miles of public roadways and rights-of-way, over 6,000 streets, over 300 bridges, 835 traffic signals and over 1,200 miles of bike/sidewalk lanes and much more.
Big events in Nashville consist of CMA Festival, Stanley Cup Finals, Titans games, and any number of special events. These require big preparation and big clean‑up, and the Nashville Department of Transportation employees are up for the challenge.
- Monitors work practices to ensure adherence to the standard operating procedures and protocols administered by Tennessee Occupational Health and Administration (TOSHA)
- Ensures all work is performed in accordance with approved safety manuals, internal policies and procedures, and industry best practices
- Conducts on-boarding safety education and training for new NDOT staff members
- Performs weekly risk assessments for field crews to identify environmental and workplace hazards and implements effective controls to mitigate liabilities
- Conducts worksite inspections for health and safety violations or hazards
- Facilitates meetings with section heads, division managers and other stakeholders on current occupational safety and health related trends and topics
- Investigates work-related safety incidents or occupational issues to determine root cause analysis and ensures corrective actions are taken
- Prepares safety reports
- Maintains employee safety training records in database
- Reviews data to identify trends on at-fault safety occurrences
- Develops strategies for alleviating safety incidents
- Presents health and safety awareness issues and statistical data to management team
Associate’s Degree from an accredited college or university and two (2) years of industrial/occupational safety experience

License(s) RequiredValid “Class D” Driver’s License

Note:
Per Metro Ordinance No. SO94-1078. All employees of the Metropolitan Government shall be residents of the State of Tennessee or become residents of the state within six (6) months of employment as a prerequisite to employment with the Metropolitan Government.
- Knowledge on basic principles of occupational safety and health.
- Proficient in Microsoft Word, Access, PowerPoint and Excel or safety related software.
- Experience investigating vehicle crashes and workplace injuries on duty.
- Completion of 10-hour OSHA General Industry/Construction Course.
