The Custodian plays a vital role in ensuring a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for guests, staff, and animals. This position is responsible for maintaining cleanliness across zoo facilities, including buildings, walkways, viewing areas, and restrooms.
Duties And Responsibilities- Demonstrate a daily commitment to Nashville Zoo’s mission and values
- Maintain regular and reliable attendance
- Clean and disinfect assigned areas including restrooms, guest spaces, floors, and surfaces
- Maintain litter-free walkways and spotless viewing windows and signage
- Perform additional duties as assigned to support zoo operations
- Attention to Detail – thorough cleaning and maintenance
- Time Management – complete tasks efficiently and meet deadlines
- Physical Capabilities – able to stand, walk, lift, and perform manual tasks
- Teamwork – collaborate with staff and departments
- Customer Service – friendly and professional with guests
- Adaptability – respond to changing priorities and weather
- Basic Maintenance Knowledge – familiarity with cleaning equipment and safe chemical usage
- Organizational Skills – keep janitorial and storage areas neat
- Communication – follow instructions and convey needs clearly
- Must be at least 18 years old
- Minimum High School diploma or GED
- Must have a valid driver’s license
- Prior janitorial/custodial experience preferred, but not required
- Learn and remember tasks; work independently
- Make timely decisions while communicating professionally with staff and guests
- Complete tasks with speed while ensuring safety of staff, animals, and guests
- Remain alert and engaged; operate equipment and vehicles safely
- Work indoors and outdoors year-round, in typical Tennessee weather
- Navigate uneven terrain and environments with dust, allergens, and varying conditions
- Move across slippery surfaces, work in confined spaces, and handle hazardous materials following safety protocols
- Regular lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds
- Schedule may include early/late starts and weekends/holidays as required
- Temporary Full-time, averaging 32-40 hours per week
- Flexibility to accommodate events, emergencies, or animal care needs
- Temporary assignment set to end on February 9, 2026
