Sanitation Worker – GMP Food Production Plant

Join a new sanitation team at a brand-new GMP food production plant in Nashville, where you will help establish and maintain a safe, clean, and compliant facility. In this role, you will perform detailed industrial sanitation of production areas, equipment, and support spaces, following the 7 Steps of Sanitation to meet FDA and GMP standards. You will start on a day training schedule to learn the production process and then move to an overnight shift, supporting a highly automated, climate-controlled environment.

Responsibilities
  • Sanitize plant floors, belts, production lines, and machinery to meet GMP and FDA standards.
  • Perform master sanitation of docks, warehouse areas, dry mixer rooms, wet mixer rooms, and other designated plant areas.
  • Follow the 7 Steps of Sanitation every day, including soil pick-up, rinsing, wet pick-up, detergent application, post-rinse, inspection, and final sanitizing/disinfecting.
  • Physically remove soils such as dirt, mineral salts, residues, proteins, lubricants, and other build-up from food contact and non-food contact surfaces.
  • Disassemble machinery as needed in preparation for cleaning and cover sensitive electronics and switches to protect them during sanitation.
  • Rinse equipment surfaces correctly using potable water at appropriate temperatures and follow special protocols for dry food areas where moisture is not recommended.
  • Use shovels, squeegees, and nylon-bristled brooms to collect floor solids and dispose of them in proper containers, avoiding soil going down drains.
  • Apply detergents and foams from bottom to top at the correct thickness, scrubbing heavily soiled areas to ensure complete coverage and effective cleaning.
  • Perform post-rinsing from top to bottom, identifying and addressing any remaining soiled or waxy areas with additional scrubbing and rinsing.
  • Inspect equipment thoroughly to confirm all food contact and other critical surfaces are free of visible soil and residues before sanitizing.
  • Apply sanitizers and disinfectants as the final step to ensure all cleaned surfaces meet sanitation and safety requirements.
  • Support weekend deep cleaning activities on a voluntary basis, focusing on comprehensive sanitation of all plant areas.
  • Communicate clearly with team members, supervisors, and production staff to coordinate cleaning activities with production schedules.
  • Adapt to changing processes, procedures, and schedules in a start-up environment and follow all on-the-job training instructions.
  • Maintain a safe work area by following all safety protocols, using required personal protective equipment, and handling cleaning chemicals correctly.
  • Perform general janitorial and industrial cleaning duties as needed to support overall plant cleanliness and readiness for production.
Essential Skills
  • Industrial sanitation experience in a manufacturing or production environment.
  • Food production sanitation experience, including cleaning and sanitizing food processing equipment and areas.
  • Working knowledge of and ability to follow the 7 Steps of Sanitation in detail.
  • Experience performing janitorial and industrial cleaning duties in a production or warehouse setting.
  • Understanding of GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices) in a food manufacturing environment.
  • Familiarity with FDA-regulated cleaning and sanitation practices.
  • Ability to safely disassemble and reassemble machinery components for cleaning.
  • Capability to use industrial cleaning tools such as shovels, squeegees, and nylon-bristled brooms.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work effectively with a team in a start-up environment.
  • Flexibility to work overnight shifts (11:00 p.m. – 7:00 a.m.) and to support voluntary weekend deep cleaning.
  • Physical ability to perform manual cleaning tasks, including lifting, bending, standing, and working in and around equipment for extended periods.
