Internship Description/Learning Objectives:
The Youth College Ambassador for Food Service will play a vital role in the Summer Food Services Program, serving as a mentor and leader while preparing nutritious meals for children and youth in a fast‑paced, team environment. They will uphold the Metropolitan Action Commission's mission, vision, and core values by demonstrating exemplary customer service, fostering teamwork, and treating all individuals with respect, dignity, and compassion.
This role combines hands‑on meal preparation with leadership development, empowering the ambassador to make a meaningful impact on food security and youth empowerment in their community.
- Maintain established standards of sanitation, safety, and food preparation.
- Collaborate with MAC leadership and staff.
- Report concerns of youth and self to MAC leadership.
- Receive and store food supplies, equipment, and utensils in refrigerators and other storage areas.
- Assist-Observe the preparation to a variety of food for meal distribution following approved procedures.
- Inform supervisors when equipment is not working properly and when food and supplies are getting low.
- Monitor youth during food production to ensure safety and quality standards are met.
- Assign tasks to youth workers, matching their abilities with appropriate responsibilities.
- Encourage youth workers on time management on task.
- Monitor assembly and distribution of task meets established guidelines, quality, quantity and distribution.
- Conduct daily meetings with youth to discuss morning, ongoing, and end‑of‑day tasks, promoting clear communication and goal setting.
- Identify and implement enrichment activities for youth during the day, fostering skill development and engagement.
- Observe and evaluate youth work ethics and professionalism, providing constructive feedback and mentorship.
- Demonstrate and encourage leadership skills, teamwork, and effective communication among youth participants.
- Performs other duties assigned.
Eager to Work and Lead:
Demonstrates enthusiasm for working in a fast‑paced food service environment while mentoring youth. This includes a willingness to take on leadership roles, such as guiding youth in meal preparation and promoting teamwork.
Leadership and Mentorship

Possesses the ability to mentor and lead youth effectively, fostering a positive work environment that encourages growth and teamwork. This involves skills such as assigning tasks, conducting daily meetings, and providing constructive feedback to enhance youth work ethics and professionalism.
- Demonstrates familiarity with essential computer software such as Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, and Word. This includes the ability to:
- Use Excel for data management and tracking inventory or supplies.
- Create engaging presentations with PowerPoint to communicate opportunities, approved specified topics, or educational content to youth.
- Utilize Word for drafting reports, newsletters, or other documents related to the program.
