CVICU registered nurses (RNs) specialize in cardiac care within an adult critical care unit, providing comprehensive care for critically ill patients with a primary cardiac diagnosis. The CVICU RN performs intensive monitoring and manages patients requiring intra‑aortic balloon pumps, external temporary pacemakers, and continuous renal replacement therapy. The RN may also work closely with the Cardiac Catheterization Lab to assist in the rapid diagnosis and treatment of patients requiring percutaneous coronary intervention for ST‑elevation myocardial infarction.
Responsibilities include responding to all cardiac and respiratory arrests, providing immediate treatment, and offering emotional support and education to patients and families about post‑treatment home care needs.
