Job Summary

The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) is a key member of the multidisciplinary healthcare team, collaborating closely with physicians and other care providers to manage a distinct patient population in the inpatient acute care setting. Working with hospitalized patients, the APP delivers high‑quality, evidence‑based medical services. The APP demonstrates advanced medical knowledge, clinical and technical competence, sound judgment, and professional communication skills, and is accountable for timely, compliant documentation and ongoing professional development.

Department Summary

NP/PA and Physician teams provide direct patient care at Vanderbilt, the Tennessee Valley VA Hospital, and Stallworth Rehabilitation Hospital. Services include day and nighttime care, teaching, consultative medicine, and focused surgical co‑management. Practices use state‑of‑the‑art electronic medical records to deliver safe, effective care and support the training of future providers through medical school and residency education.

Key Responsibilities
  • Obtain and document health histories; perform complete or system‑focused physical examinations and develop assessment and care plans.
  • Provide primary, acute, and complex care, managing overall patient care and identifying expected outcomes for diagnoses.
  • Order, perform, interpret, and collect data using appropriate assessment techniques and diagnostic procedures.
  • Develop differential diagnoses and treat acute and chronic conditions.
  • Prescribe therapeutic interventions—pharmacologic, non‑pharmacologic, and surgical—to achieve expected outcomes.
  • Use evidence‑based, approved practice protocols in planning and implementing care.
  • Initiate appropriate referrals and consultations.
  • Provide specialty‑specific consultation services within scope of practice.
  • Facilitate patient transitions between and within health‑care settings, including admission, transfer, and discharge.
  • Recognize that responsibilities are a general overview; additional duties may be assigned.

  • Advanced health‑systems and policy management, demonstrating commitment to professional development and ethical practice.
  • Advanced patient and family‑centered care, managing diagnosed and undiagnosed patients within scope of licensure and certification.
  • Advanced clinical knowledge and practice, applying biomedical, clinical, and social sciences to patient care and education.
  • Advanced practice‑based scholarly inquiry and integration, using evidence to improve patient care practices.
  • Advanced interpersonal and communication skills, establishing and maintaining professional relationships.
  • Advanced professionalism, participating in committees, professional organizations, and activities influencing advanced practice.

Position Qualifications
  • Licenses and certifications:
    Licensed Nurse Practitioner (Tennessee), Physician Assistant Certified (Tennessee), Registered Nurse (Tennessee).
  • Relevant work experience: 1+ years as an APP.
  • Education:

    Master’s degree.
  • Experience level:
    Less than 1 year (additional experience accepted).
