Job Description

12‑month post‑graduate training program for newly graduated nurse practitioners (NPs) and physician assistants (PAs) seeking to transition into oncology‑based care. The fellowship provides clinical rotations, didactic curriculum, self‑study coursework, mentorship, and peer support, with protected educational time to develop a well‑rounded provider capable of practicing patient care across the cancer care continuum.

Essential Functions
  • Assess physical and psychosocial status of patients; obtain and document comprehensive health history; perform symptom‑specific physical exams.
  • Identify symptoms specific to oncology patients, impact of comorbidities, signs of progression or recurrence, and late effects of treatment.
  • Conduct pharmacologic assessment, including prescriptions, OTC meds, supplements, and complementary therapies; recognize deviations from normal.
  • Order and interpret ancillary data; prioritize findings; identify patients eligible for clinical trials; relay information to collaborating physicians.
  • Communicate care plans to patients, caregivers, and team; enter orders in EMR; prescribe medication and blood products based on labs; order diagnostic and follow‑up studies; provide therapeutic measures; document post‑discharge care per practice protocols.
  • Administer therapeutic measures and obtain specimens per guidelines; manage cancer and treatment side‑effect symptoms; refer or request consultations; assist in family dynamics and coping during acute and chronic phases.
  • Serve as a resource for the team; provide care for clinical trial participants; evaluate quality of care and recommend improvements; perform procedures such as bone marrow biopsies; take call as required; maintain BLS certification; respond to phone calls; round in hospital; admit patients; complete other duties as requested.
Teaching
  • Educate patients and families on treatment plans, utilizing age‑and‑culture‑appropriate methods such as diagrams and handouts.
  • Facilitate decision making regarding discontinuation of active cancer treatment and optimize supportive care.
  • Educate cancer survivors on long‑term risks and effects of treatment.
  • Provide formal and informal education to staff; develop educational materials; present updates to professionals at local, regional, and national levels.
  • Participate in community discussions, support groups, and informal consultations to provide oncology education and support.
Communication
  • Report patient information accurately and timely; edit dictation.
  • Work effectively with others and utilize chain of command; collaborate with other disciplines to ensure continuity and quality of care.
  • Represent the APP in department and board meetings; share information with APP group.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Knowledge of Tennessee Oncology Advanced Practice Provider Guidelines.
  • Knowledge of the Advanced Practice Practitioner as outlined in the Tennessee Oncology Policy and Procedure Manual.
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) certification preferred but not required.
Education, Licensure, and Certification Prerequisites
  • Graduated from an accredited nurse practitioner or physician assistant program before the fellowship start date.
  • Proof of undergraduate and graduate transcripts.
  • License to practice as NP or PA in state of Tennessee required.
  • Master’s degree in nursing or certification as a Physician Assistant required.
  • National certification as APP (American Nurses Credentialing Center or American Academy of Nurse Practitioners) or certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants required.
