GI Medicine

A staff level Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Physician Assistant (PA) position is available in the Digestive Disease Center at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. The role focuses on Gastroenterology and Digestive Disease and is part of the Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition. The individual will provide direct patient care, collaborate with physicians, and participate in patient teaching and education.

• GI experience (preferred)
• Pancreas experience (preferred)

• TVC
• 5 days per week (in clinic & telemedicine from home)
• No call/holidays/weekends

• Assessment of health status and perform a complete history and physical examination for acute and chronically ill patients.
• Order and collect data using appropriate assessment techniques and diagnostic procedures.
• Serve as the first responder for both nursing and house staff in patient status changes and procedural or resuscitative interventions.
• Assess risks associated with care of acute and chronically ill patients, including medication side effects, immobility, nutrition, electrolytes, immunocompetence, and invasive procedures.
• Coordinate the daily clinic schedule with the attending physician team, present patient reports, collaborate in the plan of care, and follow assigned patient population.

• Collaborate with interdisciplinary team to make diagnoses of acute and chronic conditions.
• Manage diagnostic tests through ordering, interpretation, performance, and supervision.
• Formulate differential diagnoses by priority and diagnose complications when appropriate.

• Identify expected outcomes and document a plan of care that addresses complex acute and chronic healthcare needs.
• Utilize evidence-based guidelines and protocols to develop individualized, dynamic plans of care applicable across the continuum.
• Prescribe diagnostic strategies and therapeutic interventions, both pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic, to achieve expected outcomes.

• Maintain ongoing communication and collaboration with interdisciplinary team members.
• Facilitate communication with patients, families, and staff to promote continuity of care across the outpatient continuum.
• Document key components of patient progress in daily progress notes, transfer and discharge summaries, and clinic notes.
• Demonstrate professional practice behaviors, including precepting, mentoring, and educational roles for students, staff, and other advanced practice providers.
• Seek opportunities for active engagement in research and evidence-based practice.

Certifications: Licensed Nurse Practitioner (Tennessee), Certified Physician Assistant (Tennessee)

Work Experience: Relevant experience with pancreatic disease and outpatient GI care.

Experience Level: Less than 1 year

Education: Master’s degree in Nursing or Physician Assistant Studies
