Precast Concrete Inspector III; PCI Level III Nashville, TN

A Precast Concrete Inspector III is the senior precast and prestressed quality authority: establishing plant quality control programs, preparing plants for PCI certification audits and DOT approvals, resolving structural acceptance questions on prestressed products, auditing supplier plants for owners and agencies, and supervising and developing Level I and II inspectors. PCI Quality Control Personnel Certification Level III is required; structural precast and DOT bridge girder experience sets the assignment.

Responsibilities:
Establish and maintain plant QC programs and manuals to PCI MNL-116/MNL-117 and DOT requirements;
Prepare plants for PCI certification audits and DOT approvals; lead the corrective actions;
Resolve structural acceptance questions on prestressed products with the engineer of record;
Audit supplier plants on behalf of owners and agencies; qualify precast suppliers;
Supervise and develop Level I and II inspectors across plants and projects.

Qualifications:

PCI Quality Control Personnel Certification Level III, current, with 6+ years of precast and prestressed QC including supervision;
Command of PCI MNL-116/MNL-117 and state DOT precast and prestressed specifications;
Experience preparing a plant for PCI certification and hosting the audit;
Credible with plant managers, engineers of record, and DOT inspectors.

The week is programs and audits: a plant QC manual revision before a PCI audit, a supplier plant audit for an owner who wants to know their bridge girders are coming from a plant that can make them, a structural acceptance question on a girder with a cracked end block, and the Level II inspector who needs to see how you handled it.

You still walk the yard, because the plant floor is where the manual gets tested. You are also the practice’s precast memory — the plants that hold their certification and the ones that struggle every cycle, and why.

Precast Inspector III is a senior technical seat. The path from here is leading the precast and structural inspection practice, or plant quality management with a certified producer.

Pay runs $38 to $50 an hour depending on certifications held, verified experience, and the program you are assigned to. Plant hours: production pours early and stripping breaks are first thing, so days start before dawn and follow the plant’s schedule, with overtime during heavy production. Plant positions are tied to the plant’s location; owner and agency inspection assignments involve travel between plants on a project basis with per diem as assigned.

Precast quality control is performed to PCI MNL-116/MNL-117, the project specification, and the DOT requirements that apply, and reported under our documented AASHTO R18 quality system. A release strength is a number, not an estimate, and a piece ships when the record says it can. Plant safety — cranes, tensioning beds, strand release, and moving product — is trained, enforced, and part of the inspector’s job.
