Research Assistant/Associate, Medical Technologist & Lab Technician
Job Summary
A laboratory in the Department of Pathology, Microbiology and Immunology is seeking a Research Assistant II (RAII) to support day‑to‑day operations while contributing directly to ongoing research projects in a fast‑paced, collaborative environment. The role involves setting up and conducting experiments, following established protocols, ensuring accurate documentation, and reporting results.
Key Responsibilities- Set up and conduct experiments, including cell culture (both eukaryotic and prokaryotic) and molecular biology techniques such as transformations, DNA preparation, PCR, and sequence analysis.
- Express and purify proteins, and perform flow cytometry.
- Prepare common reagents and solutions, and support routine maintenance of laboratory equipment.
- Manage inventory of reagents and supplies.
- Assist with other laboratory and research activities as needed.
- Record, compile, interpret, and communicate data and results.
- Perform calculations involving molarity, percent solutions, and serial dilutions.
- Operate and troubleshoot equipment in experimental procedures, read and follow equipment manuals, and maintain sterile conditions.
- Maintain inventories and laboratory readiness for experiments.
- Recognize problems, suggest solutions, and assist in modifications as directed.
- Provide appropriate written documentation of experiments and prepare preliminary research progress reports.
Typical schedule is Monday–Friday during daytime hours, with flexibility in start and end times as long as responsibilities are met. Occasional weekend work may occur. The role is on‑site at VUMC Medical Research Building IV, 2215 Garland Ave., Nashville, TN.
QualificationsRequired: Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent experience) and 2 years of experience in molecular biology.
Preferred: Experience with plasmid preparation, cloning, DNA mutagenesis, and cultured mammalian cells.
