Qualifications

Education and Experience:

Graduation from a standard high school or GED and at least two years of full-time work constructing or repairing elevators, escalators, or inspecting passenger or freight elevators, escalators, and moving walks.

Substitution of Education for

Experience:

Full-time experience in the inspection/construction of passenger or freight elevators, escalators, and moving walks may substitute for the required education to a maximum of two years.

Necessary Special Qualifications

Successful completion of the Tennessee Elevator Inspector Licensing Exam within one year of hire date.
A valid motor vehicle operator license may be required for employment in some positions.

Overview

Under immediate supervision, performs elevator inspection work of routine difficulty and other duties as required. This mid-level class in the Elevator Inspector sub-series learns to inspect new and existing installations for compliance with state standards. It differs from the Elevator Inspector Assistant (entry-level) and from the Elevator Inspector 2 (working-level).

Responsibilities

Learns to inspect elevators, escalators, and other lifting-and-conveying devices including dumb-waiters, tramways, moving walks, and ski lifts.

Learns to examine electrical and mechanical features of elevator installations for conformance to safety regulations.

Learns to process information received during an inspection and apply it to appropriate codes.

Learns to communicate with people outside the organization, representing the organization to customers, the public, government, and other external sources.

Learns through departmental procedures and training sessions that enable the employee to receive a state license and QEI (Qualified Elevator Inspector) certification.

Learns to handle complaints in a professional manner.

Learns to develop constructive and cooperative working relationships with others and maintain them over time.
