mdha serves nashville and davidson county. The mission of the metropolitan development and housing agency (mdha) is to create quality affordable housing options, support neighborhoods, strengthen communities, and help build a better nashville. Mdha employs over 300 staff members, has a budget of $200 million, and houses approximately 30,000 people, primarily through nearly 8,000 section 8 vouchers and over 6,800 apartments, which are mainly project-based rental assistance (pbra) units, at 39 properties.

Mdha is a housing authority, a community development agency, and a redevelopment agency.

position summary

the family coach position provides direct service to low-income residents who reside in mdha properties and the metropolitan nashville area, participate in rental assistance programs, or maintain current standing on any mdha housing waiting list. Under-our chance tn grant funding, a demonstration program with organizations across seven middle tennessee counties, the family coach is responsible for mitigating the effects of the benefits cliff, incentivizing employment, and career development, and increasing self-sufficiency among middle tennessee’s most vulnerable residents.

This position works directly with participants in a collaborative process to help identify and achieve children, caregivers, and family goals. Using family centered coaching, strives to serve the whole family, keeping the participants in the driver’s seat, and centering families as the experts on their own strengths and perceived challenges ahead.

duties and responsibilities resident interaction
  • lead coached families in care coordination, helping build a team of support that surrounds each family and guides them towards their self-identified goals.
  • connect families with needed and available community resources including but not limited to partner’s services and the network’s navigators and specialists.
  • provide holistic and comprehensive services to caregivers including intake assessments, goal setting, long-term action plan development, progress monitoring (including assm and appropriate assessments), advocacy and referrals.
  • meet with family on a regularly scheduled basis (based on tiers) for 18-36 months on average.
  • maintain 25 enrolled families at a given time.
  • conduct home visits as needed.
  • input family participation, progress, and assessments in the network’s data system.
  • use data to make informed decisions and improve family interactions and support.
  • participate in professional development opportunities and cross-training with network partners.
  • carries out other duties as assigned.
administrative functions
  • performs varied duties in entering and maintaining computerized information.
  • answers phones and directs calls to appropriate staff, answers general inquiries.
  • obtains and recounts information which requires considerable knowledge of the department.
  • compiles data for statistical, financial or narrative reports.
  • deals with the public and answers questions on matters involving some knowledge of departmental policies and procedures.
  • provides general customer service to all mdha resident services' clients, including but not limited to providing information and referral, enrollment information and emergency referral response. Must maintain some knowledge of departmental policies and procedures.
education, experience & other requirements

bachelor’s degree in human or social services, education, or related field, and two (2) years of experience working with families and young children. Applicants with nonprofit experience and training in trauma-informed care, family-centered coaching, conscious discipline, and aces preferred.
