Heavy Equipment Operator

Position Summary:

Operates traveling or stationary crane to lift, move, and position loads, such as structural parts of ships or vessels, related machinery, equipment, products and materials, using hoisting attachments such as hooks, clamps, slings, electro‑magnet, or bucket. Operates earth moving equipment for excavation and soil grading.

Working Conditions:

Scheduled workdays Monday‑Friday; weekends and holidays as required. Works in all weather conditions, both indoors and outdoors, may be required to work remotely. Exposed to ultraviolet light, electrical hazards, vibration, noise, moving mechanical parts, working at heights >6 ft., over water, alone, and confined spaces. Exposure to temperature changes, fumes, smoke, dust, gases, chemicals, hydrocarbons. Protective clothing, hearing and eye protection, hard hats, safety shoes, respiratory protection required.

Essential Job Functions:

• Observes load hookup and determines safety of load.
• Manipulates controls to regulate speed and direction of equipment and hoist movement.
• Cleans and maintains crane, excavation, and hoisting mechanisms.
• Inspects equipment for defects and reports to supervisor.
• Attaches load to hook or other crane accessory before operating equipment.
• Repairs defective parts on crane or excavation equipment.
• Operates overhead cranes, other lifting equipment, and company vehicles.

Job Requirements:

Education and Vocational:
Must be able to read and write alphabetically and numerically. Technical school or on‑the‑job training; must provide verifiable references of past work experience.

Physical Requirements:

Repetitive sequences involving balancing, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, lifting, finger manipulation, grasping, seeing, hearing, speaking, and smell. Classified as medium work exerting 20‑50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10‑25 pounds of force frequently, or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds constantly. Physical demands exceed light work.
