Job Description

This position is for a Social Studies Department Head/Teacher at Wilson Middle School, responsible for maintaining a high‑quality curriculum, instruction, and assessment across both middle schools and for serving as a productive member of the school’s administrative team.

Job Goal

Lead the social studies department, teach up to three sections at Wilson Middle School (Grades 5‑8), and collaborate with principals, the Assistant Superintendent of Teaching, Learning and Innovation, and district administrators to implement district initiatives.

Qualifications

Education: Masters Degree and a minimum of three years teaching and/or administrative experience.

Professional Certification:

  • DESE Certification – Social Studies, 5‑8
  • Supervisors license preferred
  • Assistant Principal/Principal license optional

Specialized Knowledge:

  • Adolescent development
  • Best practices in instructional pedagogy
  • Strong content area knowledge
  • Best practices for supervising adults

Preferred Experience:

  • Minimum of three years teaching and/or administrative experience
  • Experience teaching in a diverse middle school

Skills:

  • Demonstrated aptitude for required duties
  • Bilingual skills, especially in Spanish and Portuguese, are highly desirable
  • Application of current research and theory in social studies
  • Curriculum development and facilitation
  • Awareness of district requirements and School Committee policies
  • Passion for working with students, families, and colleagues
  • Flexibility, collaboration, and multitasking in a fast‑paced environment

Essential Functions of the Job
  • Establish a positive and productive learning environment and set challenging, realistic expectations for staff and students.
  • Use an understanding of adolescent learning processes to develop appropriate policies and programs.
  • Lead staff in applying effective curriculum design, implementation, and evaluation methods.
  • Encourage staff development of innovative curriculum concepts.
  • Oversee curriculum writing within the subject area.
  • Adapt curriculum and instruction to address characteristics of diverse cultural groups and ethnic minorities.
  • Use community resources to enhance curriculum and instruction.
  • Design and implement assessment mechanisms to measure performance and use results to improve academic outcomes.
  • Lead department efforts to obtain new print and other media to support curriculum updates.
  • Chair committees as needed for accreditation processes.
  • Teach up to three classes.
  • Engage in professional development to remain current and share resources with staff.
  • Hold department meetings as needed.
  • Utilize effective models of staff development and in‑service education.
  • Attend department head meetings and support school mission and goals.
  • Promote a positive school climate and represent the department at public forums.
  • Consult with teachers at middle and elementary levels and align curriculum across grades.
  • Encourage diverse teaching styles while applying evaluation standards.
  • Manage student discipline in the assigned area.
  • Comply with school regulations, programs, policies, and applicable state and federal regulations.
