Job Goal: The Special Education Teacher is responsible for day‑to‑day management of the classroom, provision of instruction, including development and implementation of Individualized Education Plan (IEP) goals, assessment, and curriculum design. The teacher also supervises classroom staff and maintains ongoing parent contact, collaborating with general and special education teachers to meet student needs.
Qualifications- Education: Bachelor’s Degree, Master’s preferred
- Professional Certification: MA DESE licensure in Special Education; MA DESE SEI Endorsement;
Additional certification in general education and/or ESL highly desirable - Specialized Knowledge:
- Identification and use of formal and informal assessments to measure student skill level and conceptual understanding of academic, social‑emotional, and behavioral benchmarks.
- Evaluation and analysis of data to provide data‑based recommendations.
- Understanding of child/adolescent development.
- Knowledge of best instructional practices for students with special abilities.
- Comprehensive knowledge of the development and implementation of IEPs.
- Familiarity with district, state, and federal policies relating to students with disabilities.
- Commitment to principles of diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice in student engagement and opportunity.
- Preferred Experience:
- Experience working in a diverse public school setting.
- Experience working with students with disabilities/special abilities.
- Experience providing academic, social‑emotional, and/or behavioral support.
- Experience with English language learners.
- Familiarity with Google Suite and Power School preferred, training available.
- Skills:
- Aptitude for job duties.
- Bilingual skills, especially in Spanish and Portuguese, highly desirable.

- Design and carry out developmentally appropriate curriculum/programming aligned with IEP goals and MA curriculum framework.
- Develop data collection systems using curriculum‑based and school‑wide progress monitoring tools.
- Implement behavior and incentive plans, maintaining data to support students’ behavior and social‑emotional needs.
- Guide classroom support staff in implementing activities supporting student goals and collecting data.
- Provide direct individual and/or group instruction via inclusion and/or resource models.
- Offer interdisciplinary programming through consultation with professional and support staff.
- Conduct thorough educational evaluations, developmental assessments, and/or progress monitoring for reports and re‑evaluations.
- Prepare MCAS alternate assessments as assigned.
- Implement social skills training approaches and programs.
- Initiate and support assistive technology use to provide curriculum access and communication support.
- Support student transitions using positive behavior supports, visuals, and appropriate interventions.
- Organize daily schedule to meet caseload requirements.
- Consult with other discipline staff to improve programming.
- Facilitate ongoing parent communication and encourage family involvement.
