School Counselor

The school counselor coordinates and carries out functions that provide educational, career, and personal guidance and counseling services.

Responsibilities
  • Instruct in accordance with the Naugatuck teacher job description.
  • Develop and deliver the comprehensive school counseling curriculum.
  • Assist students in the areas of academic issues, career planning, and social/emotional development.
  • Provide individual and small group counseling within the realm of certification.
  • Consult and collaborate with teachers, staff, and parents in understanding and meeting the needs of students in the school setting.
  • Confer with families and professionals in the school and community for the best interests of the students.
  • Plan, evaluate, and revise the school counseling program.
  • Pursue continuous professional growth to stay abreast of the field.
  • Promote and advise students and their parents as to the progress toward issues such as promotion/graduation, ranking, GPA, scholarships, and awards.
  • Prepare students for the transition to the next level: post high school activities.
  • Advocate for participation in various standardized testing programs.
  • Meet with students who are failing a course(s) and contact their parents.
  • Meet each student on his/her case load at least once during the course of the school year.
  • Work with the Dean of Students to counsel students with excessive absences or tardies.
  • Perform additional duties, where appropriate, which are assigned within the scope of employment and certification.
    • Required Qualifications
    • Certification in school counseling/guidance.

    Reports to:

    Building principal and appropriate supervisor
