Norris Middle and High School are accepting applications for a full-time Middle School Band Director and High School Assistant Band Director for the 2026-27 school year. The selected candidate will collaborate with experienced middle and high school music educators to provide high-quality music instruction and develop instrumental music skills for students in grades 6-12.

Required Qualifications:
Hold or be eligible to obtain a valid teaching certificate, with a preference for candidates holding an endorsement in Music Education.


TEACHING RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Assume primary responsibility for the instrumental music programs at the middle school level (grades 6-8) and assist with the instrumental music programs at the high school level (grades 9-12).
    • This position provides leadership for and directs the middle school band programs during the school day as well as leads the co-curricular components of the middle school program (ex: jazz band) with the support of the high school band director.
    • This position assists with the direction of the high school band during one period of the school day as well as supports the co-curricular components of the high school program (marching band, pep band, etc.)
  • Teach foundational music skills, knowledge, and strategies through developmentally appropriate instruction, utilizing courses of study adopted by the Board of Education and other appropriate learning activities.
  • Lead effective music instruction in a structured classroom setting that supports student engagement, creativity, and active participation.
  • Evaluate each student's growth in musical skills, knowledge, and participation, using observations and assessments to guide instruction.
  • Provide large-group and small-group instruction to adapt the music curriculum and meet the diverse learning needs of all students.
  • Establish and maintain clear standards of student behavior to ensure an orderly, safe, and productive learning environment.
PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Maintain professional competence through district-provided in-service education and self-selected professional growth activities.
  • Collaborate cooperatively with other teachers and professional staff to support a balanced and developmentally appropriate music program and overall student success.
  • Communicate effectively with parents, school counselors, and administrators regarding student progress, music programs, and performances.
  • Participate in curriculum development, faculty committees, school events, and the sponsorship or support of student activities as appropriate.
  • Work cooperatively with administrators to support evaluation processes in accordance with district guidelines and follow all Norris School District staff handbook policies.
ADMINISTRATIVE RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Select and requisition instructional materials, consumable supplies, and equipment; maintain accurate inventory records for music resources.
  • Maintain appropriate care, storage, and use of school-owned musical instruments, equipment, and instructional materials.
  • Participate in curriculum review processes and ongoing professional development activities related to music education.
  • Serve on faculty committees and assist with the supervision or sponsorship of student activities, as appropriate.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor in support of the school's music program.
EXTRACURRICULAR RESPONSIBILITIES
  • The middle school band director, in conjunction with the high school band director, helps facilitate the co-curricular and extracurricular instrumental music programs of the school. This may include, but is not limited to: middle and high school jazz band, high school pep band, high school marching band, small group ensembles, etc.
  • Exact extracurricular activity responsibilities are agreed upon through collaboration with the high school band director and the middle and high school activities directors/administration.
  • Extra duty compensation/stipends are provided for this position's additional responsibilities.
    • Middle School Band Director: 4% of base salary
    • High School Assistant Band Director: 10% of base salary
BENEFITS
  • Base pay 2026-27: $41,700
  • All years of service accepted. 4% vertical, 5% horizontal salary schedule (9 graduate credit hour horizontal increments)

  • 88 hours (11 days) non-specified leave per year
