Position SummaryUnder the general direction and supervision of the Division Dean/Associate Dean of the Building Construction Technology Program, the instructor is responsible for providing regular instruction, developing, and updating the courses taught in a classroom/laboratory, web-based, and/or distance learning environment in the Prison Education Program (PEP) and/or other SCC locations. Teaching assignments include residential and light commercial construction applications and principles. The role also involves maintenance of labs and equipment, developing course objectives, implementing teaching strategies, advising students, monitoring and evaluating student progress, keeping accurate records, and collaborating with program and College teams.
EssentialFunctions
- Provide Student Instruction in Program Courses as Assigned
- Provide primary instruction to a diverse student population in residential and light commercial construction applications and principles, basic carpentry hand tools, portable power tools, stationary power equipment, construction theories, processes, and practices. Secondary areas focus on cabinet making, machine woodworking, building site layout, masonry, concrete, safety, OSHA’s HCS, and job‑site safety.
- Additional areas include applied construction mathematics, residential/light commercial building code requirements, and frame and trim carpentry.
- Prepare written instructional materials such as lesson plans, instruction sheets, and tests to promote maximum learning.
- Determine appropriate material to cover (subject to program chair and division approval).
- Operate and utilize appropriate audio‑visual and multimedia equipment and software.
- Create and Develop Teaching Aids and Supplements
- Create visual communication presentations (PowerPoint, Prezi, or other visual graphics software), use of interactive LCD projector, develop instructional aids on the computer, compile a library of training films, DVD, and videos to supplement instruction.
- Create classroom and lab training, mock‑ups, aids, and exercises using industry manuals, instruction techniques, and codes reflecting accurate and up‑to‑date methods.
- Develop New Courses and Update Existing Courses
- Share responsibility for developing new courses and updating existing courses to keep the program current.
- Write course objectives, develop syllabi, handouts, tests, and research textbooks, online resources, and data for course use. Update existing courses to ensure they align with industry standards.
- Maintain and Upgrade Classroom/Laboratory Instructional Facilities, Instruments, and Equipment
- Share responsibility for the maintenance of all instructional facilities, instruments, tools, equipment, and program classrooms, ensuring safe and proper working order.
- Complete and Maintain Program and Student Records
- Maintain permanent student records on courses taught and enforce college policies regarding attendance, grading, and student achievement.
- Use Canvas, Web Advisor, and the HUB, as well as Microsoft Office applications.
- Assist with purchase orders, production orders, and inventory records for lab areas.
- Maintain Technical Competency in the Teaching Area
- Attend seminars, professional association meetings, conferences, educational workshops, or other related training sessions for self‑study.
- Participate in college activities related to professional development, diversity, and safety.
- Attend program activities and college activities as requested.
- Act as a Technical Advisor for Students
- Advise program students on academic standing, support, and college policies, guiding them in completing records and forms.
- Assist students in selecting and registering for courses and advising on academic progress and graduation requirements.
- Serve as the first line of communication between students and College staff.
