Position

Purpose:

Assists K-12 Counselors in the development, supervision, professional development coordination, and implementation of the School Counseling program under the direction of the School Counseling Supervisor. Develops innovative approaches to connect school and central office administration with actionable data to target efforts and improve student outcomes. Utilizes data to improve processes and outcomes in relation to college, career, and life readiness. This individual works to support educational and post‑secondary opportunities that will enable all students to achieve their highest potential through work with counselors, principals, support staff, students, families, and the community.

Knowledge,

Skills, and Abilities:
  • Master’s degree or higher in School Counseling from an accredited college/university.
  • A valid Nebraska Teaching Certificate with an endorsement in the area of administration is required before the first duty day.
  • Secondary school‑based experience preferred.
  • Successful experience (3-5 years minimum) working in or with an urban education system with a focus on academic, social, emotional, career, and behavioral support.
  • Classroom teaching or school‑based management experience is highly preferred.
  • Public speaking experience preferred.
  • Exemplary communication skills (verbal and written).
  • Exemplary computer skills and understanding of technology platforms, such as Infinite Campus, Schoo Links, and Excel.
  • Ability to coordinate and collaborate effectively with diverse groups of professionals across multiple departments and organizations to achieve unified, consistent practices.
  • Knowledge of evidence-based practices for academic, college/career, and social/emotional development.
  • Knowledge of the ASCA (American School Counselor Association) model and the ASCA Code of Ethics, as well as the ability to access and utilize data to support counselors in their work.
  • Operation and use of multimedia materials and office equipment, general office procedures, and effective public relations skills.
  • Skilled multitasker and excellent time manager; ability to effectively achieve multiple goals and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Knowledge of the responsibilities of the role of the school counselor and the total school counseling program.
  • Knowledge of Omaha Public Schools’ mission, purpose, goals, and the role of the employee in achieving them.
Essential Performance Responsibilities:
  • Provide leadership, advocacy, and support to all 180 elementary, middle, and high school counselors to implement district initiatives as directed by the Superintendent and strategic plan.
  • Partner with other divisions (e.g., Social Work, Social Emotional Learning, Attendance, Multi‑Tiered System of Supports, Career Technical Education, Curriculum Instruction and Support, Student Information Systems, Community Partnerships, Research, Office of School Improvement, Information Management Systems, etc.) on various efforts including ongoing professional development across the district to support student records and practices.
  • Develop and lead regularly scheduled professional development for school counselors and the continuous improvement of the school counseling program.
  • Provide support to increase student achievement, particularly in academics, college, and career access milestones, including FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) Completion, attendance, and behavior.
  • Ensure integration of School Counseling strategies with the district’s strategic plan and priorities.
  • Collect and measure outcome data district‑wide and assist buildings with data collection and reporting.
  • Engage in school counseling program planning and reviews, and data access and analysis, including the School Counselor Intervention tab in IC and Tableau dashboards.
