African American Studies – Part‑time Lecturer Pool

Overview

The Department of African American Studies invites applications for a part‑time lecturer pool. The pool serves to provide teaching support for the following subject areas:

African American Culture
African American History
African American Literature
Ethnic Studies

Qualified applicants will be contacted as positions become available. Appointments from the pool are temporary and often made just prior to the start of an academic term. Applicants must be available on short notice.

Required Qualifications

Master’s degree in African American Studies, Ethnic Studies, or a related field.
Demonstrated ability to interact with and work effectively with a culturally diverse range of students, including first‑generation college students.

Preferred Qualifications

PhD in African American Studies, Ethnic Studies, or a related field.
Experience working with diverse populations and fostering a collaborative, supportive, and inclusive environment.
Relevant work experience and demonstration of innovative approaches to interdisciplinary pedagogy.

Appointment and Salary

All part‑time faculty appointments are for one semester, subject to the CSU collective bargaining agreement. The salary range is $5,507 – $6,677 per month, prorated to units worked with monthly payments. For a three‑unit assignment, typical compensation ranges from $6,608.40 to $7,465.20 per semester.

Performance Evaluation

Regular evaluations are conducted in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement and University policy. Performance determines future teaching assignments.

Mandatory Reporting and Background Check

Position holders are mandated reporters under California law and must comply with CSU Executive Order 1083. The offer is contingent upon a satisfactory background check; continued employment requires ongoing background screening.
