Position Overview:

As one of two Controller positions, the Controller I will be a strategic thought-partner, and report to the CFO. The successful candidate will be a hands-on and participative manager and will lead and develop an internal team to support the following areas: finance, budgeting, administration, and IT. The Controller I will play a critical role in partnering with the senior leadership team in strategic decision making and operations as the Winnebago Tribe continues to enhance its quality of programs.

Specific Job Duties/Responsibilities: Demonstrates the Winnebago Tribe’s core mission, vision, and values. Maintains a system of internal controls and ensure that continuous monitoring of internal controls happen throughout various divisions of the Tribe. Ensure all GL reconciliations are completed for month end close. Coordinate the Tribe’s financial planning, budgeting, and investment activities in accordance with the Council’s guidelines. Prepare and manage the WTN departmental budgets as well as oversee the annual budgeting process.

Oversee grant compliance by ensuring that report results comply with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP). Monitor the setup of Awards, Projects, and Tasks based on identified grants and track budget versus actual using accounting software and Excel spreadsheets. Work closely with managers on the status of grants and projects. Support the CFO in order to maintain short-range/long-term financial plans, forecasts, and updates.

Assist in preparing and providing data for monthly, quarterly and annual reports. Collaborate with external auditors to provide information needed for the annual audit. Assist in providing audit support to the CFO and communicate accounting and reporting issues to regulatory agencies by reviewing, analyzing, and preparing supporting documents and other related materials. Supervise various accounting staff. Evaluate staff performance and provide relevant training or professional development opportunities.

Identify improvements to the Tribe’s processes to enhance overall operations of various divisions. Monitor Tribe’s financial policies and procedures and ensure these are updated as and when needed. Retain a general proficiency of all day to day activities of the finance department. Learn and develop various systems and procedures around Intacct and Martus Solutions software. Train users on the various systems and serve as the administrator for the accounting and budget software.

Ensures compliance with loan and fixed asset reconciliations. Works in partnership with the CFO and HR on the maintenance of insurance plans including property, liability, and workers’ compensation and employee benefits. Assist in preparation of the Tribe’s indirect cost rate each year and run allocations monthly. Lead special projects Post journal entries and accruals Performs other duties as assigned. Required Qualifications /

Skills:

BA/BS Degree in Accounting or Business Administration preferred, Master’s degree preferred. Sage Intacct experience strongly preferred. CPA, CMA, CGFM, or similar certification preferred. A minimum of 3 to 5 years of senior level Accounting and Finance preferred. Familiarity of fund accounting required. Knowledge of federal, state, and local funding and grant requirements as well as familiarity with community resources preferred.
