Position: Medical Laboratory Technician, PRN (hours vary)
Location: Holdrege

SUMMARY

The Medical Laboratory Technician performs medical laboratory tests, procedures, experiments, and analyses to provide data for diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease of patients of all ages. Compliance with rules and regulations of all applicable federal, state and local laws as well as PMHC policies is a condition of employment.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Incumbent must have the skills, ability and judgment to perform the following essential job duties and responsibilities with or without reasonable accommodation:

  • May verify / validate patient results unsupervised.
  • Conducts quantitative and qualitative chemical analyses of body fluids such as blood, urine, and spinal fluid, under the supervision of the Medical Technologist.
  • Studies blood cells, their numbers, and morphology.
  • Performs blood group, type, and compatibility tests for transfusion purposes.
  • Analyzes test results and enters findings in computer.
  • Assesses data regarding the patients procedure based on the patients age and condition.
  • Provides and instructs patients; and/or their families, or significant others with information appropriate for age and learning abilities.
  • Performs quality control studies to ensure accuracy of clinical data.
  • Assists in data collection for Quality Assurance/Improvement.
  • Performs routine preventative maintenance on assigned instruments and equipment according to established schedule and procedures.
  • Draws blood from patient's finger, heel, toe, vein, or artery, observing principles of asepsis to obtain blood samples.
  • Prepares laboratory specimens for transfer to referral facility.
  • Verifies instrument functioning by checking and calibrating specific lab instruments and documents data.
  • Records on instrument logs any repairs, replacement, and maintenance needed of equipment.
  • Maintains patient confidentiality at all times.
  • Responsible for rotation of departmental call duties.
  • Greets customers promptly and courteously.
  • Trains and supervises students.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Directly reports to Director of Laboratory.

The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, employees frequently works near moving mechanical parts and is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles and risk of electrical shock. The employee occasionally works with explosive, toxic or caustic chemicals. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. The level of risk of exposure to blood borne pathogens is Classification (I), as outlined in the Hepatitis B Vaccine Program Policy.

REQUIRED EDUCATION

Associates degree (A.

A.) from a two-year college or university in Medical Laboratory Technician.

COMPETENCIES / CERTIFICATIONS REQUIRED

M.T. (A.S.C.P.) or M.T. (H.E.W.) preferred.
