Overview
The Medical Assistant supports orthopedic, spine, and pain management practices by assisting providers with clinical care, patient preparation, and daily operational tasks. The MA plays a key role in ensuring efficient clinic flow, high quality patient experience, and accurate clinical documentation. This role prepares patients for exams, assists with in-clinic procedures, and supports care coordination across the orthopedic and pain management specialties.
Key Responsibilities- Patient Care & Clinical Support: Prepares patients for orthopedic, spine, and pain evaluations, including collecting histories, pain scores, mobility assessments, and imaging reports. Assists with in-office procedures such as joint injections, trigger point injections, wound care, cast/splint support, and EMG preparation as applicable. Performs vital signs, medication reconciliation, and pre-procedure checklists specific to pain management and orthopedic workflows.
- Operational & Workflow Support: Ensures exam rooms and procedure rooms are stocked with orthopedic and pain-specific supplies (splinting materials, injection supplies, durable medical equipment). Coordinates patient flow to support high-volume specialty clinics. Escorts patients, provides post-visit instructions, and ensures follow-up imaging or referrals are scheduled.
- Documentation & Clinical Accuracy: Accurately documents clinical information in the EHR, including pain assessments, injection details, ortho/spine exam findings, and treatment plans. Prepares patient charts with imaging uploads, operative reports, and specialty-specific documentation. Supports prescription refills and prior authorizations for orthopedic and pain medications.
- Communication & Patient
Experience:
Communicates with patients regarding mobility needs, pre-procedure instructions, and post-injection/surgical expectations. Coordinates with imaging centers, physical therapy, and DME vendors as needed. Provides empathetic, patient-centered support for those experiencing chronic or acute pain. - Quality & Compliance: Follows protocols for sterile technique, injection safety, and controlled substance workflows within pain management. Adheres to HIPAA, OSHA standards, and clinical safety guidelines.
- Team Collaboration & Growth: Works closely with orthopedic surgeons, spine surgeons, pain physicians, APPs, and nursing staff. Participates in specialty-specific training and continuing education. Supports process improvements for ortho/spine/pain patient care delivery.
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Certified Medical Assistant or equivalent preferred.
- Experience in orthopedics, spine, pain management, or musculoskeletal care strongly preferred.
- Knowledge of anatomy, musculoskeletal terminology, and injection procedures is beneficial.
- Strong communication skills and ability to work in a high-acuity, fast-paced clinic.
- Working knowledge of Athena (EMR) workflows is highly preferred.
Work Environment Requirements
- Frequent walking, standing, transporting patients, and assisting with mobility.
- Ability to lift or assist with orthopedic supports, braces, and clinic equipment.
