Overview
Oversees the nursing care operations for all patients of a particular unit during assigned shifts. Provides guidance to nursing staff and oversees patient admissions and discharges. Provides continuing healthcare and education to patients and families to help them achieve optimal health.
Schedule:
4x10 hour shifts, days TBD.
- Provides oversight of the department, delegating responsibilities to nursing staff and assisting with coordination of patient care for the patients’ surgical experience.
- Leads development and implementation of unit plan when expected demand exceeds capacity.
- Assures departmental assignments are made according to established criteria, policy, and procedure.
- Provides supervision to nurses regarding the specific plan to be coordinated for patients.
- Works with nurses to decide an optimal care plan specific to individual patients.
- Ensures all processes and procedures are followed under set protocols.
- Promotes unit efficiency and contributes to development of procedures during coordination, care, and treatment of patients.
- Promotes coordination among team members and monitors unit activities.
- Maintains positive customer relations with patients, visitors, physicians, and staff.
- Initiates action to prevent, minimize, and correct risks to patients, families, or staff.
- Assures appropriate utilization of supplies, equipment, human resources, and budget.
- Manages information and documentation using the nursing process in accordance with hospital policy; reports to other team members.
- Mentors, coaches, and role‑models positive leadership with nursing and other staff.
- Partners with Unit Director and Manager in interviewing, training, supervising, competency evaluation, and reporting of unsafe practice.
- Assesses nursing staff performance and provides guidance during performance‑based evaluations.
- Provides daily patient care and pre‑admission testing phone calls.
- Recognizes patient complexities and informs physicians of any changes in progress or needs.
- Assists in recruiting new staff members.
- Conducts orientation and training for new staff in collaboration with the nurse educator.
- Maintains Joint Commission standards and assists in readiness for visits.
- Serves on hospital or system committees as assigned; maintains communication between unit staff and committees.
- Serves as a resource for staff and physicians for day‑to‑day issues.
- Provides patient care and education according to the patient population served.
- Ability to perform a multi‑tasked role as a leader, educator, and organizer.
- Ability to demonstrate clinical competence in patient and family education and physician assistance.
- Knowledge of all ages and developmental levels applicable to care.
- Strong communication skills with patients, families, and staff; collaborative with the healthcare team.
- Problem‑solving and assessment abilities.
- Thorough and concise patient documentation in any required mode.
- Ability to work in a fast‑paced environment with frequent interruptions.
- Calm and rapid response to emergencies and stressful situations.
- Independent management of multiple priorities.
- Computer proficiency, familiar with Windows and Office programs.
- Experience using electronic medical records.
- Registered nurse with current state nursing license.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in a hospital setting.
- CPR certified.
- ACLS and PALS certified within 6 months of employment.
- Experience using electronic medical records.
- On‑call (continuously or rotationally) to provide support.
- Availability to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.
- Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing.
- Minimum of 2 years of supervisory nursing experience.
- Pediatric experience.

Physical RequirementsRequires moving, lifting a minimum of 50 pounds occasionally (34‑66%) and up to 20 pounds frequently or constantly to move objects. Requires adequate hearing and vision for phone contact, computer use, and reading charts and forms.
