Job Summary

The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) provides professional nursing care for residents of all ages in long‑term care, under the supervision of a registered nurse, advanced practice provider, or physician. The LPN demonstrates knowledge of nursing principles, applies competency within the full scope of nursing expertise, and utilizes age‑and population‑specific standards to meet residents’ physical and psychosocial needs. The role involves testing, recognizing problems, recommending solutions, and responding effectively during emergencies to ensure residents’ health, comfort, and safety.

Responsibilities
  • Demonstrate knowledge of nursing principles applicable to residents.
  • Practice within the full scope of nursing expertise and apply appropriate age‑specific standards as per the care plan.
  • Perform testing to evaluate data reflective of a resident’s status and provide necessary care.
  • Recognize problems, recommend solutions, and respond effectively during emergent situations.
  • Ensure residents’ health, comfort, and safety.
  • Contribute to resident assessment and administer medications or treatments as ordered.
  • Provide technical support to healthcare professionals as needed.
  • Document resident interactions and outcomes related to care, medication, behavior, activity, and diet.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with residents, health‑care providers, and the public.
  • Work effectively with professional and supportive personnel as a member of an interdisciplinary care team.
  • Communicate clearly and maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.
  • Counsel residents, family members, and/or resident advocates on prevention and treatment plans under direction of a registered nurse or advanced practice provider.
  • Apply resident education principles to develop a self‑care program.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Graduate from an accredited practical nursing program and be a licensed practical nurse (LPN).
  • Associate degree in practical nursing is preferred.
  • If IV therapy is required, hold a North Dakota Board‑approved AASPN program credential with IV therapy in the curriculum or a completed IV Therapy course approved by the North Dakota Board of Nursing.
  • Have attended a pre‑licensure nursing program with supervised clinical experience across the lifespan or possess a minimum of 400 hours of LPN experience at another facility.
  • Holder of an unencumbered LPN license with a State Nursing Board and/or multi‑state licensure privileges.
  • Obtain and maintain required department‑specific competencies and certifications.
  • Complete required annual continuing education units (CEU) and competency training for the department and facility.
