Job DescriptionUnder general supervision, serves as a lead worker on a continuous basis and assigns and monitors the work activities of a crew engaged in various semi‑skilled to skilled tasks to maintain and preserve highways, shoulders, roadside areas, structures, and other broad pavement surfaces and related markings/signs in a safe condition. Ensures work is conducted in a safe manner and performs independent skilled maintenance duties outdoors in all types of weather.
The successful applicant will train and guide Hwy Maintenance Workers, perform maintenance operations, and assist the Hwy Maintenance Supervisor in the management of personnel and report the work performance of crew members.
Added Pay Differentials- $1/hour after 1 year of continuous service
- $1/hour after 3 years of continuous service
- $1/hour after 5 years of continuous service
- Schedules, distributes/balances, and guides work assignments of other maintenance workers.
- Reviews and reports crew performance to supervisors.
- Trains maintenance co‑workers in specific tasks and procedures.
- Directs maintenance operations such as armor coating, crack sealing, brush cleaning, guardrail repair, patching, and shoulder repair.
- Operates all types of maintenance equipment including trucks, rollers, front‑end loaders, tractors, motor graders, snowplows, draglines, backhoes, distributors, lay‑down machines, rock cutters, snoopers, semi‑truck trailers and similar equipment.
- Safely moves, drags, lifts, loads, and unloads various equipment, materials, supplies and hazardous materials or objects, and spreads and tamp surfacing materials.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Minimum: at least 18 years of age, valid driver’s license, Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License with air brakes and tanker endorsements or ability to obtain CDL within 60 days of employment.
- Experience in maintenance of highways, roadsides, and other pavement surfaces and operation of general and specialized equipment.
- Preferred:
Experience in operation of heavy equipment.
A valid Class A CDL with O restriction and tanker endorsement required within 60 days of hire (via in‑house CDL training). Must be a safe worker and team oriented. Occasional overnight and/or statewide travel may be required. Regular and reliable attendance is required. Must be able to report for snow removal and other highway emergencies within 40 minutes under normal driving conditions, be placed on‑call, and respond during non‑scheduled work hours, including holidays and weekends.
Work performed in adverse weather and traffic management activities. Incumbent must be certified as a Hwy Maintenance Worker Senior on date of employment; some positions may require specific certifications such as flagging certification or pesticide applicator license.
- Knowledge of semi‑complex highway maintenance and construction methods; equipment and tools; safe work procedures.
- Ability to understand, follow, and communicate instructions without constant supervision; endure outdoor work under adverse weather; perform minor mechanical work on tools and equipment; recognize safety hazards and take corrective actions.
- Physical ability to move, drag, lift 35 pounds frequently, up to 60 pounds occasionally, 90+ pounds infrequently with assistance.
- Ability to climb, bend, or stoop; select and operate various equipment; apply agency policies; train employees; plan and direct work assignments of a small group; resolve crew problems.
- Willingness to learn and accept challenges by learning new technologies and processes.
- Quality/results‑oriented sense of urgency.
- Ability to work safely and demonstrate safe and reliable practices and behaviors.
- Ability to interact positively, treat all co‑workers, supervisors, and public with dignity and respect, resolve conflicts, and make good decisions with sound judgment.
