Pay: $21.95 per hour (base); additional $1/hour differentials for CDL holders after 1, 3, and 5 years of continuous service.
Classification:
Highway Maintenance Worker/Senior (eligible for promotion to Senior).
CDL status:
Class A or B with air brakes and tanker endorsements required within 60 days for Senior; within 90 days for base position. CDL training costs covered by the Department.
- Operate trucks and light equipment to transport crews or materials to work sites.
- Mow right‑of‑ways and maintain shoulders and roadsides using power hand mowers and tractors with attachments such as discs, harrows, seeders, cement mixers, and sprayers.
- Operate post drivers and install or remove signs, fences, guardrails, and snow fences.
- Remove and apply surfacing materials including concrete and bituminous patching, crack filling, and sealants; apply adhesives, paint, and other materials to guardrails, posts, buildings, and other structures.
- Perform manual labor as needed and handle hazardous materials.
- Control traffic through and around construction and maintenance projects according to established safety procedures: set signs and cones, relay road and weather conditions via two‑way radio.
- Safely move, drag, lift, load, and unload equipment, materials, supplies, and hazardous items within weight restrictions.
- Inspect, clean, maintain, and repair assigned equipment; maintain grounds and buildings in maintenance yards.
- Operate snow removal equipment as needed or during emergencies.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
- Minimum age 18 years.
- Valid driver’s license;
Class A or B CDL with air brakes and tanker endorsements required (within 60–90 days). CDL training costs covered by the Department. - Experience operating heavy equipment or farming background preferred.
- Commercial pesticide applicator license preferred.
- Basic computer and arithmetic skills desired.
- Physical ability: lift 35–60 lbs frequently, up to 90 lbs occasionally with assistance; climb, bend, stoop; work in outdoor temperature extremes and near high‑speed traffic.
- Reliable attendance; must respond to emergencies within 45 minutes and be on‑call during non‑scheduled work hours, including holidays and weekends.
- Ability to read, communicate, follow directions with minimal supervision, and work safely in adverse weather and traffic conditions.
