Hwy Maintenance Crew Chief – Falls City
Location:
Falls City, NE. Hiring Rate: $25.331 per hour.
Under general supervision, the crew chief leads and assigns work to a crew engaged in maintaining highways, shoulders, roadside areas, structures, and pavement surfaces, ensuring all activities are conducted safely.
Responsibilities- Lead and assign tasks to crew members, ensuring timely completion of maintenance operations.
- Operate, service, and maintain equipment such as trucks, rollers, front-end loaders, tractors, graders, asphalt distributors, chip spreaders, and bridge repair tools.
- Train crew members on equipment operation, sign and guardrail repair, shoulder work, bridge work, landscaping, snow removal, storm damage response, traffic control, and safety procedures.
- Perform independent skilled highway maintenance duties and related tasks as required.
- Manage personnel, report crew performance, and assist the Highway Maintenance Supervisor in supervisory duties.
- Familiarize and comply with department specifications, standards, and regulations.
- Move, drag, lift, load, and unload equipment, materials, supplies, and hazardous objects from the roadway; spread and tamp surfacing materials.
- Carry out snow and ice removal operations.
- Fill in for the Maintenance Supervisor in their absence.
- Maintain records and reports of daily operations, materials, and resources.
- Use computer systems for time reporting, record keeping, documentation, and reporting.
- Attend training to remain current on procedures, equipment, and materials.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Minimum age of 18 years and a valid driver's license.
- Possession of a Class A or B Commercial Driver's License with air brakes and tanker endorsements, or ability to obtain the CDL within 60 days of employment.
- Experience in highway maintenance and operation of general and specialized equipment.
- At least five years of experience and proficiency in maintenance activities and equipment operation.
- Experience with maintenance-related paperwork.
- Ability to resolve minor crisis situations without supervisory input.
- Experience in training and leading a crew.
- A valid Class "A" CDL with O restriction and tanker endorsement is required within 90 days of hire via the in‑house CDL training program.
- Team-oriented, safe worker with reliable attendance.
- Occasional overnight travel and on-call status for emergencies; must respond within 40 minutes under normal driving conditions.
- Effective communication and ability to interpret and follow instructions.
- Decision-making skills to keep the work group processing.
- Interpersonal skills to resolve conflicts and maintain a respectful workplace.
- Physical capability to safely move, drag, and lift 35 pounds frequently, up to 60 pounds occasionally without assistance, and 90 or more pounds infrequently with assistance.
- Ability to work in outdoor temperature extremes and high-speed traffic environments.
